MSU rallies from late tie for 4-3 victory over Northern State

The Minot State Beavers finished the day splitting with the Northern State University Wolves. In game one, both Sara Van Wickler and Anna LaCount put RBI doubles on the board, which led to a Beaver win. In game two, the Beavers fell one run short of the Wolves. Minot State will return to the turf on Sunday to host the Augustana University Vikings.

GAME 1: Minot State 4, Northern State 3

The Minot State Beavers broke through after a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning to defeat the Northern State Wolves 4-3 Tuesday.

Senior Reegan Floyd (11-4) started in the circle and picked up the win for Minot State (21-13, 9-2). The right-hander went six innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on five hits, allowing no walks and striking out eight.

Trailing 1-0, the Beavers first put runs on the board in the third inning. Minot State got on the board thanks to junior Sara Van Wickler’s RBI double with two outs.

The Wolves broke the tie and re-took the lead heading into the sixth inning, when the Beavers got back on the scoreboard. Minot State scored three runs in the frame, buoyed by a two-RBI double from junior Anna LaCount, which brought the Beavers lead to 4-2. Northern State put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Minot State still held on for the 4-3 win.

GAME 2: Northern State 7, Minot State 6

The Minot State Beavers took a 6-5 lead into the sixth inning, but could not hang on and fell 7-6 to the Northern State Wolves Tuesday.

Senior Jasmine Blizzard (8-6) started and took the loss in the circle for Minot State (21-14, 9-3). The right-hander went six innings, giving up three runs, all of them earned, on six hits, allowing one walk and striking out nine.

At the plate, the Beavers were led by junior Anna LaCount, who went 1-for-4 on the day with a home run and two RBI. Senior Abby Lohse compiled a noteworthy day at the dish as well, going 1-for-3 with a home run, a walk and an RBI. Freshman Sarah Misner also chipped in for Minot State, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding a double and an RBI.

The Beavers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the bottom of the first inning. Minot State’s offense started clicking and put up four runs, including a two-run home run off the bat of LaCount.

The Wolves then tied the ballgame at four before the Beavers came back to reclaim their advantage in the third inning. Minot State picked up a run on Lohse’s one-out solo home run off of freshman Dessa Bryant, which brought the Beavers lead to 5-4.

Northern State fought back to even the ballgame at five before Minot State reclaimed a 6-5 advantage in the fourth inning. The Beavers were unable to hold the lead, as Northern State scored two times over the remaining three innings to grab the 7-6 win.
