MSU sluggers working overtime in AZ

TUCSON, Ariz. – Anthony Disantis, Noah Balandran, and Alex Engel each allowed one hit, leading the way for Minot State University (MSU) on the hill in an 11-0 victory in 7 innings as the Beavers bounced back and split a pair of games Wednesday in Arizona at the Tucson Invitational.

Minot State (7-5 overall, 2-2 NSIC) notched an 11-0 win over league rival Northern State in a non-NSIC game to wrap up the day after the Beavers fell 4-3 in 8 innings to Southwest Minnesota State in another non-NSIC contest.

The Beavers now get two days off before returning to Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play with a pair of neutral-site doubleheaders as MSU battles Winona State on Saturday and Sunday, March 16, in Tucson to wrap up two-plus weeks in Arizona.

Southwest Minnesota State 4, MSU Men 3, 8 innings

It was a nailbiter on Wednesday, as the MSU Beavers were unable to push that tying run across in a 4-3 loss to the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs in a non-NSIC contest.

Junior Jake Seibert (0-1) took the loss on the mound for Minot State. Junior Ian Bauer was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going two shutout innings without allowing a hit, walking none and striking out three.

Offensively, the Beavers were paced by senior Grant Gabbert, who went 2-for-3 on the day with a double and two RBI. Junior Michael Williamson put together a standout day at the plate as well, going 2-for-3.

The Beavers got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the bottom of the first inning with the game still scoreless. MSU got an RBI single from junior Noah Madas, scoring Gabbert from second base.

The Beavers then held the Mustangs scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. Minot State pushed two runs across on a two-run double off the bat of Gabbert that brought home Williamson and sophomore Noah Gutierrez, which brought the Beavers lead to 3-0.

The Beavers were unable to hold the lead, as Southwest Minnesota State scored four times over the remaining six innings to grab the 4-3 win.

MSU Men 11, Northern State 0, 7 innings

Junior Anthony Disantis, senior Noah Balandran, and sophomore Alex Engel combined to throw a shutout on Wednesday as the MSU Beavers blanked the Northern State Wolves 11-0 in a non-NSIC contest.

Disantis (1-0) started and picked up the win for MSU, going five shutout innings while giving up one hit, walking one, and striking out five. Engel was dealing out of the bullpen as well, going one shutout inning, allowing one hit, walking none and striking out one.

Offensively, the Beavers were paced by senior Grant Gabbert, who went 3-for-4 on the day with a triple and an RBI. Junior Oscar Pegg compiled a standout effort as well, going 1-for-3 with a double and three RBI.

Junior Noah Madas also chipped in for MSU, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding three RBI.

The Beavers took the lead for good in the first, scoring for the first time in the inning. MSU’s offense started clicking and put up four runs, including a two-run single off the bat of Madas and a two-run double from Pegg.

The Beavers then tacked on runs in four more innings, with their biggest output coming in the second when they scored four times. Connor Hill had an RBI double, Gabbert added an RBI triple, Pegg and an RBI sacrifice fly, and Madas added an RBI single to make it 8-0.

MSU Men 10,

Winona State 9

The MSU baseball team scored early and often, then held strong to topple Winona State 10-9 in a non-conference contest in Arizona on Tuesday, March 11.

Oscar Pegg was a one-man wrecking crew for the Beavers (6-4 overall, 2-2 NSIC) as he went 2-for-5 with a double, a home run, and 5 RBIs in the victory.

The two teams will meet again in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday in Arizona.

MSU got things rolling in the top of the first as Connor Hill singled and scored, Pegg plated two with a double, then Javier Gutierrez made it 4-0 with an RBI single before the Warriors (6-2, 4-0) even grabbed a bat.

Winona State got two runs back in the bottom half of the inning, but the Beavers went back to work in the third and fourth innings, padding the lead.

Shane Kary and Michael Williamson each singled home a run and Seungjun Song added an RBI groundout in the top of the third, then Pegg blasted a 3-run home run in the top of the fourth for a 10-2 MSU lead.

Then it was hang-on time as the Warriors got three back in their half of the fourth, two more in the sixth, and closed to 10-9 down in the eighth before Minot State shut down the comeback to score the win.

Brent Riddle added three hits in the victory, while Madas and Williamson each had a pair of base knocks for the Beavers.

Devin Marton (2-0) earned the win for MSU, pitching a scoreless fifth inning and striking out two, and Conner Meldrim pitched a perfect ninth, striking out two to earn his first save of the season.
