Lakers top Wahpeton, play for fifth place in Division A tourney

BISMARCK — After a tough opening-round defeat to Devils Lake Firebirds on Wednesday in the quarterfinal round of the Division A NDHSAA Boys Basketball Tournament, Des Lacs-Burlington Lakers looked to rebound against the Wahpeton Huskies on Friday.

The Lakers needed a big fourth quarter, outscoring the Huskies 18-10, to advance to the fifth-place game on Saturday with a 51-45 win over the Huskies.

Colton Feller had his second big game of the tournament, scoring a game-high of 27 points and adding eight rebounds, four assists and two steals for the Lakers. Jake Schaefer added 10 points, seven rebounds and one assist in the win.

The Huskies had three players in double figures, led by Treyton Mauch with 16 points, Brayden Steffens and Bjorn Kubela each added 11 points.

The Lakers will face the Beulah Miners in the fifth-place game of the Division A NDHSAA boys basketball championship at 11:45 a.m. today at the Bismarck Event Center.

Beulah beat Killdeer with a score of 58 – 52. Braylen Schirado led the Miners with 21 points. Shane Schmidt added 13 points and Benny Schirado scored 12 in the win.
