WDA boys hockey tourney ready to go
The regular season is finally completed and the postseason is underway. The Western Dakota Association (WDA) boys hockey tournament had play-in games on Monday and the tournament kicks off on Thursday, February 20, at the Maysa Arena this year.
In the play-in games, the No. 10 seeds from Hazen-Beulah played at Williston- the No. 7 team with the Coyotes winning to advance. The No. 9 seeded Midgets from Dickinson traveled to No. 8 Bismarck High and took the road win to advance. Both play-in games were shutouts with Williston posting the 7-0 win and Dickinson posting the 4-0 win.
The games at Maysa kick off at 11 a.m. with the No. 1 seeded Magicians playing No. 9 Dickinson in the first game on the ice. The second match will be No. 4 Mandan against No. 5 Jamestown. No. 2 Bismarck Century will play No. 7 Williston in the third match while No. 3 Bismarck Legacy will battle No. 6 Bottineau-Rugby in the final game of the quarterfinal round.
The Friday games will feature the state advancement games between the teams that lost on Thursday in the first two matches. The winners will play the third and fourth games as semifinals for the tournament. The first game has a puck drop at 11 a.m. again.
Saturday games begin with the winners from the consolation bracket facing the losers from the semifinal games on Friday as play-in games for the state tournament. Once the two advancement games are completed, the WDA Tournament Championship game will take place. Games start at 11 a.m. again on Saturday, February 22, at Maysa.
The North Dakota state boys’ hockey tournament will be hosted by Grand Forks Public Schools and played at Ralph Engelstad Arena on the campus of the University of North Dakota. The top four finishers from the West Region Tournament will join the top four place winners from the East Region Tournament. The tournament will be conducted Feb. 27-28 and March 1.
