Velva makes team cut for state duals, several involved in individual brackets
The 2025 North Dakota State High School Activities Association Boys Wrestling Team Dual Tournaments kick off this week on Saturday, February 22, at the Fargodome. The Velva Aggies are the second seeded team from the west region and will face Pembina County North in the quarterfinal round.
Oakes will take on Williams County, South Border will face Carrington and Bowman County will take on New Salem-Almont in the other three quarter final matches. The duals start at 10 a.m. for the Class B event.
At the Class A duals taking place at the same time, West Fargo Sheyenne will take on Williston, Bismarck Century will face Grand Forks Central, Bismarck High takes on Devils Lake and Fargo Davies will face Bismarck Legacy.
The individual tournament kicks off on Thursday, February 20, at the same location. Local athletes that are set to wrestle have their work cutout for them.
At the Class A, Eliah Rogers from Minot High is seeded 12th at 114-pounds for the Magicians. Tayven Blackaby has the same seeding at 121 for Minot High. Korbin Kraft at 127 is the fourth seed at the tournament while Kaden Kraft at 145 is also the fourth seed.
Gavin Tanberg at 152 is the 13th seed for Minot High while Noah Bledsoe at 172 is the fifth seed for the Magicians. Evan Berg at 189 is the seventh seed while Lincoln Brooks is the second seed at 215 for Minot High. Liam Neff at 285 rounds out the Magicians representatives with a 14th seeding.
In the Class B Individual Tournament, several local athletes will work their way to a hopeful podium visit.
Isaiah Hackman from Velva is the top seed at the 107-pound classification. Braden Brossart from Rugby is also in the 107 bracket along with Tucker Miller from Des Lacs-Burlington (DLB). Cam Peterson from Kenmare-Bowbells rounds out the local reps in the 107 bracket.
At 114, Stanley wrestler Louden Haugen is the fifth seed while Payton Seay from Bishop Ryan is the sixth seed to start the day. Velva’s Alex Leier faces the two seed in his first match. At 121, Cole Mogren from Kenmare-Bowbells is the fourth seed. Regan Gustafson will face the fifth seed in the same bracket.
At 127, Cohen Bell from Stanley is seeded third while Lusas Soli from Velva is the eighth seed going in. Easton Hansen from DLB will face Bell in the first match. At 133, Paul Melin from Kenmare-Bowbells is the eighth seed at the tournament.
At 139, Brextyn Yanish from Velva is the number two seed to start the day. Kane Reep from Stanley and Gage Holter from Kenmare-Bowbells are also in the bracket. At 145, Velva’s Carson Hildre is the second seed with William Cook at the third seed. Breyden Buee from DLB is the seventh seed in a classification with several talented local grapplers.
At 152, Bailey Zachmeier starts as the fifth seed while Jack Smith from DLB and Colter Fladeland also made the bracket. At 160, Maddox Campbell starts as the sixth seed for the Aggies.
The top seed for the 172-pound bracket is Drew Zwak from Bishop Ryan. Madden Barsted from Velva is the seventh seed in the same classification. On the 189 bracket, Stanley’s Trey Bohmbach is seeded third while DLB’s Kenny Smith is sixth and Velva’s Noah Werner is eighth to start the day.
At 215, DLB’s Johnathan Smith is seeded fourth while Griffin Wilhelmi from Stanley is seventh to start. Kenmare-Bowbells grappler Tucker Timm is the first round opponent for Smith. At 285, the top seed for the tournament is Cade Okeson. The seventh seed is Hank Bodine from Velva and his first opponent is Braden Jundt from DLB. DeLaney Feldman from Kenmare-Bowbells also made the bracket.
