Racine claims Belle of the Brawl
CASSLETON – Central Cass High School hosted the third annual Belle of the Brawl girls wrestling tournament. The girls finished off their regular season Saturday, February 1, in Casselton at the Belle of the Brawl. The Cassleton tournament is one of the largest girls events before state, giving these ladies one last chance to get a significant win or an upset before the state tournament.
Minot High participated with a full team at the Belle of the Brawl. Minot had nine girls that placed in the varsity brackets and six placed in the junior varsity division. Madisyn Racine took home Minots only first place finish.
Racine dominated the first few rounds of the 118-pound bracket with two pins and a 12-0 major decision in the semifinals. Racine worked her way up to wrestle her long time rival from Bismarck Legacy Alicia Kenfack in the finals. Kenfack held the lead in the match up until she got her third stalling call, forfeiting two points to Racine to tie the match. In sudden victory overtime Racine scored one final takedown to secure her first place finish.
Ella Brown at 100 pulled off a second place win for Minot High. With three pins to start the 100 pound bracket Brown was undefeated until she faced Anna White in the finals. White, a returning state champ, bested Brown in the finals with a pin.
Jade’ance Fletcher was Minot High’s only third place finish. Fletcher gave a show of power with two quick pins at 250 to start the tournament. In the semifinal round Fletcher gave up the match to her Grand Forks opponent Kathryn Sullivan. Working her way back up Fletcher pulled off one more win to secure her third place finish.
The Majettes placed second at the Belle of the Brawl with 144.0 points brought in by eight varsity placers.
The Des Lacs-Burlington-LC (DLB) Lakers brought six wrestlers to the Belle of the Brawl. The Lakers had three ladies that placed in their weight classes . Kashtyn Bredahl at 124-lbs. placed fourth. Bredahl won her first two matches by fall in the first period. Third round, Bredahl lost to Marlie Stemick of Pembina County North by an 11-3 major decision. In the match for third place Bredahl was pinned by Grace Hamm from Frazee.
At 155 Deysi Krisher took third place for the Lakers. Krisher pinned her opponents in the first and second round of the tournament. Krisher was beaten in the semi-final round by Julia Araujo. In her final round wrestling for third place Krisher once again pinned her opponent and secured a third place finish.
DLB’s Victoria Pasterz took the second place finish at 170. Pasterz won her first match by a 11-3 major decision over Gracie Boen from Badger-GB-MR. Pasterz won her next two matches by fall. In her final match, Pasterz fought hard but ultimately gave up the pin to Bismarck High’s Maddison Reems.
Rugby, one of the smaller teams at the event, went home with one varsity placer. Bria Brossart took the third place finish at 100-pounds. Brossart battled for pins in the first two rounds. In the semifinals after four long minutes of wrestling Brossart gave up the pin in the second period to Minots Ella Brown. To take her third place win Brossart delivered a quick pin to Minots Brooklyn Ost.
Bismarck Legacy will host the Western Dakota Association (WDA) dual state qualifying tournament Saturday, February 8.
The east and west state qualifying tournaments will be held Friday, February 14. The WDA tournament will be in Watford City, the eastern qualifying tournament will be held in Casselton.
The state tournament for both boys and girls will be February 20-22 at the FargoDome.
