Majettes beat Patriots in quarters, advance to semis game

GRAND FORKS – The Minot High girls hockey team played their first round of the state tournament Wednesday, February 26 against the Bismarck Century Patriots, the three seed of the tournament. Minot High entered the tournament at the six seed with a 12-11 record. The Majettes have an average of 2.61 goals per game with Brynn Hanson leading for points with 42 and leading goals with 21.

The Majettes pulled off the 3-2 win and will continue to play through the state tournament in the semifinal round.

The Patriots started the game off quickly into the first period with over five shots on the goal within the first five minutes of the game. Majette goalie, Promesa Phillips, skillfully deflected all attempts.

Both teams took turns defending their goals with no scoring success until Minot High made a goal. The first goal of the game belonged to Sydnee Bartch with assists from Kamry Garaas and Brynn Hanson to earn Minot High an even strength goal 13 minutes in.

The Majettes out shot and out scored the Patriots in the first period. Minot High ended the first period with eight shots on goal and the 1-0 lead.

Bismarck Century started the second period of the game with a two minute penalty for checking from Aubrey Hay. Minot High moved the puck around over the ice to find an opening while they had the advantage on the court but couldn’t find the opening. Minutes later the Majette’s Julia Stone earned Minot High its first penalty. The Majettes kept the Patriots off their goal while they were down one player.

Yvonne Slind with an assist from Hanson earned Minot High their second goal of the game 11 minutes into the second period. In the last few minutes in the second the Patriots made six shots on their goal, all defended by Phillips.

Bismarck Legacy showed up to play in the final period of the game. Lily Kuennen scored a Patriot goal three minutes in, followed by teammate Avery Matt less than a minute later with a second even strength goal.

With minutes left of the game the Patriots got another two minute penalty giving the Majettes an opportunity to score. With numbers in their side Minot High’s Hanson scored a power play goal with assists from Slind and Bartsch to break the tie and take the 3-2 lead.

With only minutes left of the game the Majettes played the defense of their lives to keep the 3-2 lead to win the game.

Minot High will play in the semifinal round against West Fargo Friday, February 28.
