Magicians inside game too much for Sentinels
The Minot North boys basketball team made the cross town trip to take on the Minot High boys in a Western Dakota Association (WDA) contest. The first time the two played on January 10, the Sentinels hosted the Magicians with Minot High taking the 82-44 win.
The second time around, the home team took the 74-64 win over Minot North in a much more competitive game that showcased the progress made by the first year varsity program.
Minot High held the edge in the first half with the 42-24 lead. That margin would end up being the difference as both teams scored 45 points in the second half of play.
The Magicians inside game was the difference for Minot High. The hosts had 52 points in the paint with offensive rebounds (15) leading to 11 second chance points and defensive rebounds (24) keeping the Sentinels from closing the gap.
Minot High hit 28-of-49 2-pointers, 7-of-18 3-point shots and 10-of-14 free throws. Minot North had 14-of-29 twos, 13-of-40 threes and 2-of-2 from the charity stripe. The inside game won the night for the Magicians.
Payton Schell posted 25 points and nine rebounds in the win. Aric Winczeski added 16 points, seven assists and ten boards while Grayson Schaeffer and Fisher Johnson each tallied 11 points in the game. Landon Bell had nine rebounds, two steals and two blocked shots for the Magicians.
Trayden Bachmeier led the Sentinels with 21 points, eight rebounds and three assists in the game. Kaiden Helm added 19 points while Brayden Blikre tallied 15 points, three rebounds and three assists for Minot North.
Minot High moved to 12-3 in WDA play, 15-3 overall and are second in WDA standings. The Magicians travel to Bismarck to play Century on Friday, February 21, and then to Mandan on Saturday this week.
Minot North dropped to 4-11 in WDA play, 7-12 overall with the loss and are seventh in the WDA standings. The Sentinels travel to Bismarck High on Friday and will be at Jamestown on Saturday, February 22, this week.
