The Minot High boys hockey team are the top team in the Western Dakota Association (WDA) standings and face WDA opponent Williston today at the Maysa Arena, but the Magicians were not always at the top of the standings, playing for the possibility of a state title or even skating on ice in an indoor facility.
The 1974-1975 team had a very different experience as the first ever season for Minot High.
To get the story established, the Minot Hockey Boosters were formed in 1968, and with the help of local sponsors and the VFW group, the Mites, Squirts, Peewee and Bantam programs kicked off along with the High School age group club.
The first ice for the teams to practice on was an outdoor rink constructed behind the Municipal Ballpark – now called Corbett Field – and the original ice was an outdoor rink. As the youth groups practiced, developed and the program grew at each age level, the decision to turn the VFW High School age group over to the Minot High School was made and the Magicians were born in the late fall of 1974 for the 1974-1975 school year.
The first season of play, Minot High and Bismarck High were the only two teams in the state to play games outside. Players, coaches, fans and family members had to clean the ice before practices, games and events. The first year of play, the team even had to hit whatever ice was available as the spring weather approached. The Magicians even traveled to Velva to practice in the fire fighters Quonset facility.
The first Minot High team had 19 players, a pair of coaches and a student manager. The coaches were Pete Mackenzie (head coach) and Bob Jagd (assistant) and the team went 3-12-1 in the inaugural season.
The following year, the All-Seasons Arena was completed and the Magicians no longer played outdoors.
Today, the Magicians host the Coyotes at Maysa Arena with the puck drop at 7:30 p.m. with the 2025 senior class athletes and their parents being honored between the JV and Varsity games. Between the first and second periods, the 1974-1975 reunion class members will be honored.
