Magi swimmers, divers post win in final dual
The Minot High boys swimming and diving team hosted Williston in their final dual meet prior to the Western Dakota Association (WDA) Championships on February 28. The Magi took the 128-55 win over the Coyotes at their home pool.
The Magi started the dual with a ‘one-two’ punch in the 200-yard medley relay. The A team of Carter Larson, Peter Wake, Logan Hill and Luke Neumann posted a 1:42.03 for first place while the B team of Levon Stai, Xavier Oswald, Jon Folk and Tim Sharp-Driver took second with a 1:53.41 time.
The same thing happened in the final event, the 400 freestyle relay. Minot High team A of Hill, Barrett Hannegrefs, Andrew Francis and Larson posted a 3:33.07 for the win with team B of Gavin King, Kayden Gutnecht, Oswald and Caden Brey took second with a 3:46.11 time.
In the 200 freestyle, Francis posted the top time of 1:53.44 for the win while Hannegrefs was third with a 2:00.27 time. In the 200 individual medley, Jon Folk took second place while Brayden Baldwin was third.
In the fourth event, Hill was first, Wake was second and Tyler Burns took third in the 50 freestyle for a sweep for Minot High. All three times were state qualifying with a 23.00, 23.38 and 24.66 respectively.
The Magi also swept the top three slots in the 1-meter diving as well. Tayson Solper was tops with a 258.01 mark. Holden Williams was second with 230.05 with Carson Nadeau in third with a 166.04 score.
In the 100 butterfly, Hill posted a 55.21 time for the win. Larson hit 56.80 for second place and Hannegres recorded a 59.87 time for third place. All three times were state qualifying. In the 100 breaststroke, Newman was second, King was third and Gutknecht was fourth for the Magi.
In the eighth event, Francis posted a 5:13.36 for the win in the 500 freestyle. Gavin Youngblood was third with a 5:56.36 time. In the 200 freestyle relay, Minot High team A posted a 1:51.54 for second place with Wake, Francis, Neumann and King swimming.
In the 100 backstroke, Larson took first place with a 57.45 while Stai was third with a 1:04.14 time – both times state qualifying. In the 100 breaststroke, Wake won with a 1:01.50 with Oswald in third place with a 1:09.32 and Brey was fourth with a 1:10.40 mark.
The Magi will be at the WDA Championships on Saturday, February 28, in Bismarck.
