Magi set up for postseason success

The Minot High Magi hosted the Bismarck Legacy Sabers Tuesday, February 25 for their last home game of the regular season and to celebrate their graduating seniors.

Minot High took the early lead over the Sabers leading 53-13 at half time. The Magi finished the game with an additional 38 points in the second half to win the game 91-49 over the Sabers.

Landon Bedell led the scoring for the Magi with 21 points throughout the game, Aric Winczewski followed with 18 points. Bedell and Fischer Johnson carried the Magi in rebounds with eight each.

The Magi’s Grayson Schaeffer quickly added to that, earning Minot High 14 more points. With another ten points from Johnson and nine from Payton Schell the Magi had the win close within reach early.

Clayton Sicble Fox and Jack Julson put up a good fight for the Sabers with nine points each. The Sabers didn’t have a single athlete score more than ten points, the Maji quickly built an unbeatable lead and picked up their last home win of the season.

This win was the 17th win of the season for Minot High giving them a 17-4 record and a high ranking in the region.

So far this season Minot High’s scoring has been led by two athletes. Payton Schell, jersey No. 1, has brought in an outstanding 476 points. Schell’s 476 points were made up of 59 3-pointers, 83 free throws and 108 2-pointers. Aric Winczewski came in second for points scored this season. Winczewski put up 369 points with an average of 18.4 points per game.

Landon Bedell, Minot High’s No. 30, takes the cake for most rebounds in the 2024-25 season. Bedell totaled 164 rebounds. He also claims the most offensive rebounds, 61, and the most defensive rebounds, 103. Schell followed with 133 total rebounds.

Bedell also leads the team for defensive fouls with 46, and comes in second for blocks with 24. Defensive blocks were led by Schell with a very impressive 42 blocks. Defensively Winczewski leads in most categories: deflections with 36, steals with 35 and charges with 20.

The Magi will continue playing through the post season at the West Region Tournament in Bismarck. Minot High’s first postseason game will be in the quarterfinal round against the winner of No.10 Williston and No. 7 Minot North in a play-in bracket.

Minot High beat Williston at home 94-40 and later in the season beat Williston on the road 76-28. Minot High also beat Minot North both times they faced off so the Magi have a very good chance to compete farther into the postseason tournaments.
