Lady Lions win, start District 6 tourney as seventh seed

The Bishop Ryan Lions hosted a double header at the Lion’s den against Dickinson Trinity Saturday, February 8. The Lady Lions battled the Titans first at 3:00 p.m.
The girls put on a good show and kept the game close until the Lions finally pulled away at the end for the 40-29 win.
The Titans took the first possession of the game. The ball traveled back and forth down down the court before Violet Demars made a three pointer for the Lions. Annabel Scheeler for the Titans replied with a three pointer of her own. Madi Wegleitner brought in two more points for Dickinson Trinity, followed by one final point from Nevaeh Berber in the first quarter.
V. Demars went back to the net for Bishop Ryan and made five more points. The Lions took a 8-6 lead to end the first quarter.
The second quarter of the game stayed close with the Lions once again leading the score. V. Demars brought in six points from out on the arc for Bishop Ryan. Alena Johannsen came in with four more points down in the paint.
Scheeler dropped in another 3-pointer for the Titans. Kambree Fleck matched that with three more points for Trinity of her own. Berber tried to take the lead from the Lions but only managed two more Titan points.
Trinity started to catch up to Bishop Ryan in the third quarter of the game. The Lions worked to keep their lead but only managed to put up two points.
The Lions still played a tough defence through the third quarter and only let one player slip through. Berber made the only points for the Titans in the third quarter. Berber stayed down in the paint and made four points, then went to the free throw line and made the final point of the third quarter.
The Lions showed up in the last quarter of the game and poured in 20 points. Olivia Demars hit the hardwood and made five points for Bishop Ryan. Tochi Udekwe followed with four more points. O. Demars and Udekwe were sent to the foul line and brought five more points.
The Titan’s Fleck and Bella Kovash took turns shooting in the lane and each brought in two points. Elly McAroy and Berber collected a few fouls and each made two points at the foul line. Berber made the final two points for Dickinson Trinity.
Johannsen and Haylee Schwan secured the Lions win with six final points. Bishop Ryan took the 40-29 win over Dickinson Trinity.
The Lady Lions have concluded their regular season competition and with the win are seeded seventh in the District 6 tournament this week.
District 6 Girls
Basketball Tournament
The District 6 tournament begins on Tuesday, February 11, and concludes this Saturday, February 15, at the Minot Auditorium.
Three games begin on day one as the sixth seeded Our Redeemer’s plays the 11th seed, Velva in game one at 4:30 p.m. followed by the seventh seeded Bishop Ryan Lions against the tenth seeded Drake-Anamoose girls. The third game will be between Harvey-Wells County at the eighth seed and Westhope-Newburg at the ninth seed. Winners will advance to the games on Thursday, February 13.
Game on on Thursday will pit the winner of Bishop Ryan and Drake Anamoose against the second seeded TGU while game two pits third seeded Surrey against either Our Redeemer’s or Velva. Game three has top seeded Berthold playing either Harvey-Wells County or Westhope-Newburg before Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood take on Glenburn in the final game of day two of the tournament.
District 5 Girls
Basketball Tournament
The District 5 Girls Basketball Tournament begins tomorrow at the New Town Events Center with North Shore-Plaza as the eighth seed playing Alexander in the ninth seed. The winner will face the top seeded Kenmare-Bowbells in game one on Thursday, February 13.
Game two on Thursday will be fourth seeded Divide County against the fifth seeded Powers Lake-Burke Central. Game three will be second seeded Tioga against seventh seeded Parshall. The last game on Thursday will be third seeded Trenton against sixth seeded Ray.
