District 6 battle for top seed all knotted up, rest of seeding still up for grabs

The only team in District 6 boys basketball that has secured their standings for the end of the regular season is Berthold with an 0-9 conference mark at the 11th slot. The rest of the seeding is still up for grabs.

Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood (MLS) made the trip to Bishop Ryan with a bid to move up from the fifth slot in the district to a higher mark. The Mavericks also hoped to move up from just receiving votes in the polls into the top ten. Neither happened as the Lions defended the Den with the 66-49 final.

The game started with MLS taking the lead early, despite being outrebounded by the hosts. The Lions finally managed to take the 10-7 lead with 3:44 to go in the first quarter of play and never relinquished it.

Bishop Ryan led 18-12 to start the second quarter and took a 41-31 lead into the half. The rest of the game was a battle of cushion between the hosts’ lead and the visitors’ effort to close the gap. The Lions led 53-42 to start the final quarter of play enroute to the win.

The Mavericks will host TGU on Saturday, February 15, for their next game while the Lions will be at Berthold on Monday, February 17, for the next District 6 match.

Drake-Anamoose 39

The Knights did their part to stay in the mix for the top slot in conference standings with a win on the road. Our Redeemer’s led 26-17 after the first quarter of play and held the lead for the rest of the game. By half the score was 47-26 and going into the final quarter of play the Knights were up 67-29 on the way to the win.

Jace Weekly and Wyatt Weekly each posted 14 points and Nolan Schmidt added ten for the Knights while Andrew Eby hit for nine and Bryce Vibeto had eight points in the win. Our Redeemer’s had 11 players add points in the game.

Kyle Volson led all scoring with 22 points for Drake-Anamoose. Ryder Bruner and Zach Volson each added six points in the effort.

Velva 98,

Kenmare-Bowbells 64

The Aggies traveled to take on Kenmare-Bowbells in a District 6 versus District 5 contest with the visitors from Velva- who are in fourth place in the standings of district play- scooped up the road win.

Velva led 28-22 after the first quarter of play and 58-34 at the half on the way to the win over Kenmare-Bowbells.

The Honkers were led by TJ Lucy with 18 points while Tygen Michalenko added 11 and Peyton Helwig posted ten points in the effort. Kenmare-Bowbells had eight players add points in the effort.

Reggie Bruner led all scoring with 41 on the night. Ben Shepp posted 14 while Reese Steffen added 11 and Wes Nickelson had ten in the win. The Aggies had four players in double digits and nine players add to the score.

The Honkers will be at Alexander on Saturday while Velva will travel to Drake-Anamoose on Monday, February 17, in a battle of familiar foes.

Westhope-Newburg 100, Surrey 47

The Sioux traveled to Surrey to try and tame the Mustangs on the hardwood. Westhope-Newburg did their part to keep pace with the top teams in District 6 with the win and moved to 7-1, tied with Bishop Ryan but holds the edge a tie-breaker with the head to head win over the weekend.

Surrey will travel to MLS next Monday while the Sioux will host Glenburn on the same evening.

Tioga 61,

Trinity Christian 50

Tioga traveled to Trinity Chrisitan and took home the road win. The District 5 victory will keep the Pirates in the hunt for the third slot in the standings as the season winds down.

Trinity Christian will host Watford City on Saturday while Tioga will host Ray on Tuesday, February 18, for their next game.

Carrington 55, Harvey-Wells County 51

The Harvey-Wells County Hornets traveled to Carrington to try their luck at the Cardinals. The hosts edged the visitors

Girls Basketball Recaps

Rugby 51,

Des Lacs-Burlington 44

The Lady Panthers hosted the Lady Lakers in a Division A, Region 3 matchup for seeding. Rugby, Des Lacs-Burlington (DLB) and New Town each have the chance to end up in fourth place in region standings and possibly stretch into second or third with the right teams losing at the same time.

With the win, Rugby stays alive while the Lakers are out of the running for second or third now.

Rugby was led by Katie Sulivan with 16 points. Lacie Deplazes added 12 while Avery Saurier added nine points in the win.

DLB’s Kaylee Werner hit for 12 points while Logen Ystaas added 12 as well. Aspyn Maccennan added 12 to the total for the Lakers.

South Prairie-Max 67, Nedrose 45

The Lady Royals kept their season record for wins in tact while defending their home hardwood in a Region 3 win.

Dunseith 56, Stanley 43

The Blue Jays traveled to Dunseith and the teams at the bottom of the region standings battled for the last slot with the Lady Dragons notching their first Region 3 win.
