Beavers sweep Saints in two game stand at home

The No. 1 ranked Minot State University (MSU) Beavers men’s hockey team secured the two-game series sweep over No. 9 Maryville University on Senior Night with a 5-1 victory on Saturday, February 8. With the win, the Beavers improve their record to 31-2-3, while Maryville University falls to 16-10-3.

The Beavers opened up the scoring in the first period, taking a 1-0 lead at 6:21 into the period on a power play goal scored by Jay Buchholz. Maryville tied the game up at 1-1 at 12:35 into the period on a goal scored by Lucas Adams.

The Beavers extended their lead to 2-1 at 5:05 into the second period on a power play goal scored by Reid Arnold. MSU quickly took a 3-1 lead at 6:24 into the period on a power play goal scored by Colby Joseph. The Beavers increased their lead to 4-1 at 17:07 into the period on a power play goal scored by Matthew Yakubowski.

MSU took a 5-1 lead at 5:34 into the third period on a goal scored by Joey Moffatt. The Beaver’s goalie, Jake Anthony, shut down Maryville in the third period to secure the 5-1 victory.

Logan Rands, Austin Clyne (2), Christian Kadolph (2), Joey Moffatt, Brayden Pawluk, Logan Cyca and Jay Buchholz were credited with assists in the game. Anthony led the way in goal for the Beavers, tallying 8 saves on 9 shots on goal, securing the victory and improving his record to 17-2-2.

Following the series sweep over Maryville University, the Beavers will be back in action on the road for their final regular season two-game series in Athens County, Ohio, to take on the University of Ohio. Game one is scheduled for Saturday, February 15, at 7:00 pm, and game two is scheduled for Sunday, February 16, at 2:00 pm.

The top ranked MSU Beavers men’s hockey team recorded their first ever win over No. 9 Maryville University in game one of a team game series on Friday, February 7, by a final score of 5-2.

The Beavers opened up the scoring in the first period, taking a 1-0 lead just under two minutes into the period on a goal scored by Colby Joseph. The Beavers quickly extended their lead to 2-0 at 6:52 into the period on a goal scored by Logan Cyca. Before the end of the first period, Maryville cut the Beavers lead down to 2-1 at 15:55 into the period on a power play goal scored by Sam Edwards.

At 4:03 into the second period, the Beavers took a 3-1 lead on a power play goal scored by

Matthew Yakubowski. Not long after, MSU increased their lead to 4-1 at 4:31 into the period on a goal scored by Reid Arnold. MSU’s goalie, Anthony, held Maryville scoreless throughout the second period, tallying three saves on three shots on goal.

Maryville opened up the third period on a power play, and Same Edwards scored his second power play goal of the game at 0:21 into the period, to cut the Beavers lead to 4-2. At 16:54 into the period, Reid Arnold scored his second goal of the game to give Minot State a 5-2 lead.

Anthony shut down Maryville for the remainder of the period to secure the 5-2 victory for the Beavers. Walker Jerome, Logan Cyca, Colby Joseph, Jay Buchholz, Brayden Pawluk, Reece Henry (2) and Sheldin Howard were credited with assists in the game.

Anthony led the way in goal for the Beavers, tallying 20 saves on 20 shots on goal, securing the victory and improving his record to 16-2-2.
