Battle at Lions Den goes to Mustangs

The Bishop Ryan Lady Lions hosted the Surrey Mustangs for some girls basketball and to celebrate the Lions seniors girls Monday, February 3. The Lions put up a fight, but ultimately couldn’t pull off the win. The Mustangs took the game 49-45 over the Lions.

The first quarter started with a good push from Sienna Klimpel with seven points for the Mustangs. Morgan Anderson with six more points gave Surrey a strong lead.

Bishop Ryan had four points from Tochi Udekwe to combat the Mustangs lead. Olivia Demars brought in a three pointer to finish the Lions scoring in the first quarter.

The Mustangs earned five more points from Ava Keller and Makya Garding to end the first quarter with a 18-7 lead over the Lions.

Violet Demars led the second quarter for Bishop Ryan with two 3-pointers. O. Demars and Johannsen each made two more points for the Lions.

Bishop Ryan’s defense was on point in the second quarter only allowing four pounds from Surrey to slip through. Two points from Anderson and two from Klimpel. The Lions shortened the Mustangs lead to 22-17 at the half.

Surrey pushed past Bishop Ryan in the third quarter and Anderson was back at the hoop with seven more points for the Mustangs. Klimpet brought in four more points to help the Mustangs keep their lead.

Bishop Ryan’s Haylee Schwan made her first 3-pointer of the night in the third quarter. Johannsen also brought in three points for the Lions, two points in the lane and one at the foul line.

Keller brought in the two final points for the Mustangs in the third quarter. Followed by Udekwe and V. Demars each with two points for the Lions.

Surrey started the final quarter of the game with a 35-27 lead over Bishop Ryan. The Lions Udekwe and V. Demars slowly chipped away at the Mustangs lead but couldn’t keep them away from the basket.

Udekwe brought in three free throw points for the Lions. The Mustangs Garding matched that with three free throw points of her own.

V. Demars made six points on the arc for Bishop Ryan, Laney Will responded for the Mustangs with four more points. Ava Keller added four more free throw points and with the assist from Anderson with three points Surrey regained their lead.

O. Demars and Taylor Lundeen brought in more points for the Lions just before the game ended. O. Demars brought in five points and went for two more at the foul line. With seconds left Lundeen made two final free throw points. Bishop Ryan with less than 10 seconds left couldn’t make the four points they needed and lost the game 49-45 to the Mustangs.

The Lions will travel to play Tioga Thursday, February 6. On Saturday, February 9 Bishop Ryan will host a double header against Dickinson Trinity. The girls will play first at 3:00 p.m., the boys will start after at 4:30 p.m.
