Wiebe, Boisvert collect NCHC honors
GRAND FORKS – Following a perfect month of December, a pair of University of North Dakota (UND) skaters took home monthly honors from the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC), as announced by the league.
Sophomore defenseman Abram Wiebe was named the NCHC Player of the Month for the first time in his career while freshman forward Sacha Boisvert captured his second straight NCHC Rookie of the Month award.
Wiebe was dynamic on both ends of the ice for the Fighting Hawks over the month of December, pacing all NCHC defensemen and all UND players with six points over the four games. The sophomore struck for a pair of power play goals in wins over Miami (Dec. 7) and No. 9 St. Cloud State (Dec. 14) while dishing out four assists in the tetrad of wins.
The Mission, British Columbia, native tallied a trio of multi-point games and earned NCHC Defenseman of the Week twice during the month while also tying for the team lead with seven blocked shots and notching a plus-1 rating. Wiebe was also crucial on special teams for NoDak, helping the power play finish with a 26.7% clip and the penalty kill go 10-for-13 in December.
On the season, Wiebe enters 2025 sitting second on the team with 14 points (4G, 10A) and in ice time at 23:16.
Boisvert showed why he is one of the top rookies in the nation once again during the month of December, repeating as the conference’s top rookie. The freshman popped a point in all four games during the 4-0-0 month for the Fighting Hawks and ended the 2024 calendar year with points in eight of his last nine games.
Boisvert struck for two goals and added three assists for five points over the four games to sit tied for second on the team, third in the league and tied for first in the league among rookies with teammate Mac Swanson for points in December.
The Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, native was clutch throughout the month, with four of his five points either tying the game or giving UND the lead for good. He notched a multi-point game, including the game winner in the final minute, in the win over Miami (Dec. 6) before dishing out the primary helper on the go-ahead tally in the third period the following night against the RedHawks (Dec. 7).
The following week, Boisvert assisted on the opening goal of Friday’s 2-0 win over No. 9 SCSU (Dec. 13) and sent the game into overtime before Jake Schmaltz’s eventual winner with a tying goal in the third period on Saturday (Dec. 14).
Boisvert leads the team with 17 points and eight goals heading into the second half of the season, with the point total ranking fifth among all rookies in the nation and tops in the NCHC and his eight goals also tying for fifth nationally and second in the conference for rookies.
No. 14/15 UND opens the 2025 calendar year with an exhibition contest against Manitoba on Saturday, January 4, at 6:07 p.m. from Ralph Engelstad Arena.
