Mustangs suffer home loss to ranked Knights
The Surrey Mustangs hosted the ranked Our Redeemer’s Knights for their first time playing each other in the 2024-25 basketball season.
After a long, hard fought four quarters the Knights collected the road win 81-41 over the Mustangs.
The first quarter went to Our Redeemer’s. The Knights quickly set the pace for the game. With seven points from Wyatt Weekley and five from Jake Altringer the Knights took the lead.
The Mustangs fought hard but could only get six points past Our Redeemer’s defense. Colin Volmer and Gavin Volmer both made three points for Surrey.
Nolan Schmidt brought in four more points for the Knights. Jace Weekley and Andrew Ebby followed with five final points for Our redeemer’s in the first quarter of the game.
The Knights started the second quarter of the game with a 21-6 lead over the Mustangs. Our Redeemer’s played the second quarter of the game just as strong as the first. J. Weekley and Schmidt each brought in six points for the Knights. Altringer and W. Weekley followed closely behind with five points each for Our Redeemer’s.
The Mustangs’ G. Volmer led the scoring for Surrey in the second quarter. G. Volmer made three, 3-pointers for the Mustangs. Teammates Bryten Vetter and Bennet Nelson each brought in two points for Surrey.
Gus Englehard and Collin Swenson earned Our Redeemer’s the final five points of the quarter. The Knights led 48-19 going into halftime.
The Mustangs were able to work past the opponents defense in the third quarter. Tegan Walhood made eight points for Surrey. G. Volmer and Logan Volmer brought in six points for the Mustangs. G. Volmer with one free throw and one shot in the lane, L. Volmer with a 3-pointer.
The Knights gave the ball to whoever was open in the third quarter. Eby and Faron Oberly together earned the Knights nine points. The Knights had five more athletes score in the third quarter as they slowly worked some of their bench players out onto the court.
Both teams slowed the pace of the game in the final quarter. Our Redeemer’s brought in 13 points. Engelhard with five, Jayden Marshall with four and both Altringer and Schmidt made two points for the Knights.
The Mustangs couldn’t narrow the gap past the Knights defense but brought in five final points in the fourth quarter. Our Redeemer’s took the 81-41 road win over Surrey.
Surrey will travel to Fessenden-Bowdon High School to play Harvey-Wells County on Thursday, February 6. The Mustangs will host Central McLean Saturday, February 8, with the game starting at 4 p.m.
Westhope-Newburg 89, North Prairie 40
North Prairie made the trip to take on the sixth ranked Sioux in Division B boys basketball. The Sioux flexed their scoring and defense in the 49-point win over the visitors.
Westhope-Newburg will be in Towner to take on TGU in a district showdown on Tuesday, February 4, and host the top team in district standings on Thursday, February 6, when Bishop Ryan makes the trip north to take on the Sioux.
Velva 71, TGU 56
The Aggies made the trip to Towner to take on the Titan hosts in a District 6 battle for standings as the season entered the downward slope of games. The Visitors from Velva, who are still receiving votes in the polls, took home the 71-56 win.
The Aggies will make the trip to play Ray on Saturday, February 1, followed by hosting Harvey-Wells County on Tuesday, February 4, to start next week.
TGU will host the Sioux on Tuesday followed by a trip to Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood on Thursday, February 6, for their next pair of district games.
