MSU men win two, drop two on the road

MARSHALL, Minn. – Minot State University’s (MSU) Wayne Joint enjoyed a perfect day on the mats, leading the way for the Beavers who picked up a pair of dual victories, including one that counts in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) standings, at the Southwest Minnesota State Dual Tournament on Saturday, January 18.

Battling at 131 pounds, Joint started off his perfect day with an 11-0 major decision win over the Mustangs’ Chase Hanson, then picked up the lone win for Beavers (5-5 duals, 1-3 NSIC) against former NSIC foe Upper Iowa, beating Dawson Schmit in a 7-2 decision.

Win No. 3 on the day for Joint came in a 9-5 decision over Andrew Honas of Fort Hays State, then Joint wrapped up his run of four straight victories with an 8-0 major decision win over Calvin Singewald of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

As for the Beavers as a team, they started the day with a 25-18 win over host Southwest Minnesota State in an NSIC-counting dual.

MSU then fell 39-3 to Upper Iowa before picking up a 22-21 win over Fort Hays State that came down to the first tie-breaking criteria, most match wins by pin as the Beavers prevailed with pins by Adrian Chavez at 141 pounds and Ryan Hrcka at 157 to just one pin by the Tigers.

The Beavers closed out the day with a 43-9 setback against Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Minot State is back in action next weekend competing in NSIC duals at Sioux Falls on Friday and at Augustana on Saturday.

Chavez added a pair of wins on the day to the Beavers total with his win by pin in 2 minutes, 13 seconds over Kevin Honas of Fort Hays, and an 11-0 major decision victory over Dylan Louwagie from Southwest Minnesota State.

Ethan Wonser and Cannon Potts also added two wins each on the day for Minot State as Wonser won a 3-2 decision over Drew Bell of Fort Hays State at 149 pounds and won an 8-3 decision over Jacob Messner of Southwest Minnesota State.

Potts won by pin in 2:25 over Kody Marschner of Southwest Minnesota State in their 197-pound match and added a 17-1 technical fall win over Cole Matulenko from Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Gavin Turk added a 5-1 win in the tie-break over Connor Padgett of Fort Hays State at 174 pounds, Brendan Barnes won his lone match of the day, a 12-2 major decision over Caden Young of Southwest Minnesota State at 165 pounds, and Hrcka’s pin came in 4:49 over Marcell Dely of Fort Hays State in their 157-pound match.
