Majettes take team victory at Rotary Classic

BISMARCK — Minot High sent 18 girls to wrestle at the Bismarck Rotary Classic Tournament. Half of the Majettes placed, scoring 203.5 points between them. With a team score of 203.5 the Minot High girls beat the next closest team by 17.5 half points. There were 36 teams that participated in the tournament.

Madison Racine for Minot High dominated the 118-lbs. weight class and took first with an ultimate tie breaker match for first place. Racine destroyed everyone in her path on the way to first place. Racine pinned the first three opponents she wrestled. In the semifinal match Racine won by tech fall over Bismarck Century’s Sydney Huber 19-1.

In the finals Racine wrestled the top seed at 118 Alicia Kenfack from Bismarck Legacy. Racine ended the match with a win in the double overtime ultimate tie breaker. Both ladies fought hard in the first period for a takedown and ended the first period 0-0, neither scoring. In the second period Kenfack scored an escape followed by Racine scoring an escape in the third period.

In the first round of overtime both ladies escaped again but could find another way to score. In the final overtime Racine scored the final escape and won the long drawn out match 3-2.

Minot High took second in two weight classes. Minot’s Maycee Boyce at 155 lbs. won over Isabel Medearis by fall in the first round. Boyce continued a pin streak for two more rounds. In the semifinals Boyce wrestled Deysi Krisher of Des Lacs, the three seed for this tournament. The two fought hard though all six minutes of the match.

Krisher scored two takedowns in the first period only letting Boyce go once with a one point escape, giving Des Lacs the 6-1 lead in the first period. Boyce started the second period on top scoring three nearfall points. The period continued back and forth ending in a score of 17- 9 with Krisher in the lead.

In the final period Boyce started in the bottom position and quickly scored a reversal. The final period went back and forth with both athletes moving quickly to score. The final period ended with Boyce scoring 13 more points, finally putting her in the lead. Boyce won over Krisher 22-20, one of the highest scoring matches of the tournament.

In the finals Boyce is matched with Julia Araujo of Bismarck High. Araujo is nationally ranked by USA Wrestling and has a perfect highschool record. Boyce worked hard to evade Araujo but couldn’t hold her off and was pinned in the first period.

Ella Brown for Minot High also placed second at 100. Brown started with two byes in the first two rounds. Brown won her first three matches by pin, all three in the first period. In her semifinals match Brown wrestled Brooklyn Lafrenz from Mandan, the two seed of the bracket.

Brown started the first period behind, 4-5 trailing Lafrenz. In the second period Brown managed to score an additional six points giving her a two point lead. To end the match Lafrenz regained the short lead before Brown hit a reversal and scored additional nearfall points to give the Majette the lead with seconds left.

Minot High had Haliegh Carr at 130 place third, with three wins by fall, then a loss to the champion at 130 by fall. In the consolation bracket Carr won her first match by 11-0 major decision and her placing match a pin over Jazmyn Ybarra in the first period to secure third place.

Monica Boakye placed fifth for Minot High with four wins and two losses in the tournament. Two of these wins were over Addison Yates. The first match Boakye wrestled against Yates, Boakye won by decision. The second time these two wrestled Boakye won by pin to show her improvements made throughout the tournament.

Also placing fifth for minot was Khylie Schlotz at 112, Riley Hansen at 142, and Claire Fegley at 148. Payten Russel placed sixth, the final placer for Minot High.

The Des Lacs-Burlington team had five girls wrestle at the Rotary, one of the smallest teams present. DLB left with two placers. Deysi Krisher at 155 placed third. Kashtyn Bredahl placed seventh.

The Minot High girls will continue their season with an away dual against Mandan on Thursday, January 16. The Majettes will also travel to dual Turtle Mountain on Tuesday, January 21. The Minot High girls will fight for a chance to wrestle at state at the regional tournament in Watford City Friday, February 14.
