Magicians, Braves both win on ice

Minot High and Bottineau-Rugby boys hockey teams had games this week so far. The Magicians were at the top of the Western Dakota Association (WDA) standings and undefeated in WDA and overall. The Braves were at 3-4-1-0 in WDA play and 3-6-2-0 overall.
Minot High 7, Williston 1
WILLISTON – Minot High hit the road on Tuesday, January 14, to take on the Coyotes in Williston. The Magicians remained perfect in WDA and overall with the win while Williston dropped to 4-5-1-0 in WDA play and 6-6-1-0 overall.
Williston jumped on the scoreboard first in the first period at the 1:10 mark for the 1-0 lead. The Coyotes would not lead again. Teegan Strand found the net at the 16:37 mark on a power play goal with Mackley Morelli and Aidan Diehl on the assists for the 1-1 tie.
The Magicians outshot the Coyotes 14-3 in the first period. Minot High had two penalties compared to three for Williston in the first period as well.
Morelli scored at the 8:23 mark of the second period on an even strength goal to take the 2-1 lead. Easton Panasuk and Diehl were awarded the assists. At the 15:08 mark, Coen Schmeichel found the net for the second goal of the second period for the Magicians. Oliver Thompson had the assist on the even strength goal for the 3-1 lead.
Minot High outshot Williston 16-7 in the second period. The Magicians had the only penalty of the second period as well.
In the third period of play, Panasuk had two goals while Rylan Roteliuk and Brady Gross each scored with all goals being even strength shots. Finlee Bentz and Morelli each had two assists in the third period of play.
The Magicians outshot the Coyotes in the third period 10-4 with neither team in the penalty box.
Devon Keller worked in the net for Minot High and faced 14 shots with 13 saves on the night.
The Magicians are in Jamestown tonight and host Bismarck Legacy on Tuesday, January 21, for their next home WDA contest.
Bottineau-Rugby 4, Bismarck Legacy 2
The Sabers traveled from Bismarck to take on the Bottineau-Rugby boys ice hockey team in a Western Dakota Association (WDA) matchup. Legacy was at 7-3-0-0 in WDA standings at second to start the match while the hosts were 3-4-1-0 in WDA play in seventh place.
The Braves scored in less than a minute of the first period when Tukker Fedje found the net with Peyton Getzlaff and Khaliel Abdurrahman awarded with the assists.
Getzlaff scored the second goal for the Braves at 1:24 of the second period with Fedje earned the assist.
With less than ten seconds gone in the third period, Landon Siemens found the net for the Braves with Getzlaff and Grady Glasner on the assists. The final goal for Bottineau-Rugby was scored less than a minute later in the third period when Getzlaff scored his second goal of the game.
With the Braves 4-2 win, Bottineau-Rugby are within striking distance of Mandan and Williston in WDA play while Legacy is only one game ahead of Jamestown and Bismarck Century with the loss.
The Braves host Bismarck High on Friday, January 18, and travel to Dickinson on January 24 for their next two games.
