Magi still stronger than Sentinels on hardwood

The Minot North boys basketball team hosted the cross town rivals for the first ever varsity matchup. The historic first win will have to wait as the top ranked Minot High team claimed the 82-44 win late Friday, January 10, at the Sentinels gym.

The Magicians started the game with solid shooting and senior points from the paint as Minot High built a 42-21 lead in the first half of play. Minot North closed the gap slightly in the second half, but the Sentinels will have to wait for another day to notch the first ever varsity win.

Minot High was led by Payton Schell who had 34 points in the game to lead all scoring. He also had ten rebounds and four blocks in the win. Aric Winczeski added 14 points for the Magi with a pair of steals. Carson Brekke and Jalen Gunville each added eight points while ten players on the Minot High roster scored in the game.

Minot North was led by Kaiden Helm with 15 points and Josia Jaquinet with 12 points. Cameron Jesz posted seven points as well in the effort. Six of the Sentinels scored in the effort.

Minot High gained and kept the edge in shooting with 58-to-35 percent shooting in the 2-point range, 31-to-20 percent shooting from beyond the arc. The Magi shot 70-percent from the freethrow line compared to 50-percent by the Sentinels.

Minot High had 29 defensive rebounds and 15 offensive while Minot North had 17 and 13 respectively.

With a 5-0 Western Dakota Association (WDA) record, 8-0 overall, Minot High sits at second in the WDA standings. Bismarck Century has a 6-0 WDA mark and 9-0 overall record. Mandan is also 5-0 in WDA play and 8-0 overall and tied with Minot High.

The Magi host Dickinson on Tuesday, January 14, and Bismarck Century on Friday, January 17, for their next WDA games.

Minot North has an 0-6 WDA mark with a 2-7 overall record. The Sentinels travel to play St. Mary’s in Bismarck on Tuesday and will host Bismarck High on Friday for this week’s games.
