Lions defeated by Lakers
The Bishop Ryan Lions hosted a double header against the Des Lacs – Burlington Lakers. The girls played first.
The Lady Lions, an unranked division B team took on the Lakers. Des Lacs-Burlington is a team that sits barely below the rankings. Bishop Ryan kept the score close but lost the game to the Lakers.
The game started with both teams scoring back and forth in the first quarter. The Lions top scorer, Violet Demars, had five of the 11 points the Lions ended the quarter with. Olivia Demars claimed four points for Bishop Ryan. Followed by the last scorer of the quarter for Bishop Ryan, Tochi Udekwe, who brought the last two points home for the Lions.
Bishop Ryan’s defense worked to keep the score close in the first period. The Lakers could only manage four points from both Logan Ystaas and Kaylee Werner. Four more points from the Lakers Ava Brown and two final points from Sierra Yale. The first quarter ended in a close 13-11 score with the Lakers ahead by two.
The second quarter brought the Lions and the Lakers to a tie. Ystaas, Werner, Brown, Piper Feller and Hannah Sundabak fought for the Lakers only too score seven more points. Ystaas, Werner and Sundsbak all claimed two points for their team. The final point belonged to Brown’s free throw point. The Lions made 9 points in the second quarter. O. Demars gave the lions five of these points. This brought the two teams to a tie to end the first half of the game.
After a short half time break both teams showed up back on the court ready to win. Des Lacs-Burlington’s defense came back much stronger in the third quarter of the game. Bishop Ryan’s Udekwe scored one free throw point for the Lions. The Lakers scored 12 more points taking the lead 32-21. The Lakers Ystaas with eight points and Werner with four.
The Lions fought Hard for a win in the fourth and final quarter of the game. O. Demars and Violet Demras both made a 3-pointer, bringing the Lions six points closer to the Lakers lead. Udekwe scored two points, followed by Alena Johannsen with two more. The Lions earned ten more points but couldn’t keep up with the Lakers lead. Ystaas gave Des Lacs four more points along with Werner and Aspyn Macclennan with three more each. The Lakers took the game 44-31 over the Lions.
The Lions will play again hosting a game against the Velva Aggies Friday, January 17.
