The holidays are over and school is back in session next week. The Surrey girls basketball team warmed up the home court with a Thursday, January 2, District 6 game against the visiting Lady Sioux. The Lady Mustangs warmed up quickly- taking an early lead- enroute to the 66-45 win over the Region 3 foes.

Halfway through the first quarter of play, Surrey built a 14-0 lead over Westhope-Newburg. By the end of the quarter, the lead extended to 25-10 despite the Sioux warming up on offense.

The one stat that both teams allowed to start early in the game were the fouls. Westhope-Newburg had four fouls before they scored any points while Surrey had five in the same amount of time.

As the scoring warmed, the fouling slowed. Pressure defense by both teams in the second quarter led to turnovers and steals. The Mustangs led 31-17 with 4:45 left to play in the second quarter and the Lady Mustangs took the 42-22 lead into the half.

The third quarter picked up where the second left off with defense as the focus for both teams. With 3:23 left in the third quarter of play, Surrey held a 44-27 lead. Neither team fouled enough to be in the bonus, but the Mustangs began to find their inside game and held the 51-29 lead going into the fourth and final quarter of play.

Surrey moved to 2-0 in district play and 5-2 overall with the win. Westhope-Newburg dropped to 0-3 in district play and 0-7 overall.

The Lady Mustangs have faced Tioga, North Prairie, Berthold, Nedrose and Harvey-Wells County to start the season. Surrey travels Saturday, January 4, to play Powers Lake-Burke Central and heads north on Tuesday, January 7, to play Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood before hosting Berthold on Thursday, January 9, in their next home game.

The Lady Sioux have played Powers Lake-Burke Central, Dickinson Trinity, May-Port-CG, Bishop Ryan, TGU and North Prairie to start the year. Westhope-Newburg will host Glenburn on Tuesday, January 7, and travel to Our Redeemer’s on Thursday, January 9, for their next games.
