Lady Beavers split two games on road
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. –The Minot State University (MSU) women’s basketball team hit 12-of-26 attempts from 3-point range, shooting 46.2 percent from deep in a 69-55 victory against the Augustana (SD) Vikings on the road Saturday, January 18.
The Beavers (5-14, 4-8) had four players score in double figures, led by Sydney Gustavsson, who had 18 points. Emma Mogen tacked on 15 points, four assists and two steals and Maya Aguilar helped out with 14 points, eight rebounds and two steals.
The MSU offense was strong from downtown, pouring in 12 threes on 26 attempts. Aguilar hit four treys for the Beavers in the contest.
MSU forced 23 Augustana turnovers while committing 21 themselves in Saturday’s game. The Beavers turned those takeaways into 24 points on the other end of the floor. Aguilar’s two steals led the way for MSU.
After falling behind 2-0, MSU went on an 8-0 run with 7:53 left in the first quarter to take an 8-2 lead. The Beavers then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 14-11.
MSU then started off the second quarter by going on a 12-0 run, highlighted by a three from Aguilar, to take a 23-14 lead. The Beavers proceeded to tack on two points to that lead and enjoyed a 35-24 advantage heading into halftime.
MSU was strong from deep in the period, knocking down six three-point shots to account for 18 of its 24 points.
Following intermission, MSU continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 43-30 before going on a 10-0 run to expand its lead further to 53-30 with 52 seconds to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Vikings had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Beavers still entered the fourth quarter with a 53-32 edge.
MSU took advantage of six Augustana turnovers in the quarter, scoring sx points off of takeaways. MSU kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Cassidy King’s layup, to grow the lead to 64-40 with 4:01 to go in the contest.
The Vikings narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Beavers still cruised the rest of the way for the 69-55 win. MSU took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 8-of-16 points in the paint.
Wayne State College 63, MSU Women’s Basketball 45
WAYNE, Neb. –Maya Aguilar, Emma Mogen and Jessica Mogen combined to score 34 of MSU’s 45 total points, but the Beavers fell to the Wayne State College Wildcats 63-45 on the road Friday, January 17.
Aguilar led the Beavers (4-14, 3-8) with 13 points and two steals. Emma Mogen added 11 points and nine rebounds and Jessica Mogen chipped in as well with ten points and seven rebounds.
MSU’s defense held Wayne State to only 39.6 percent shooting from the field. The Wildcats did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with five offensive rebounds and managed five second chance points while MSU cleared 27 defensive rebounds.
After jumping out to a 3-2 advantage, MSU went on a 7-0 run with 8:39 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Taylor Goss, to increase its lead to 10-2. The Beavers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 15-12 advantage.
MSU relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 15 points.
MSU kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 9-0 run starting at the 7:48 mark in the second period to increase its lead to 24-14. The Wildcats cut into that lead, but the Beavers still enjoyed a 26-18 advantage heading into halftime. MSU dominated in the paint, scoring six of its 11 points close to the basket.
MSU then lost its advantage in the third quarter and trailed the Wildcats 46-35 entering the fourth. MSU played well near the basket, scoring eight of its nine points in the paint.
MSU could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 63-45. MSU pulled down two offensive rebounds to score two second chance points out of ten total in the period.
