The Bishop Ryan Lions hosted the Surrey Mustangs at the Lions Den on Friday, January 24. After a long fought game with the Bishop Ryan 80-33 win over the Mustangs, the Lions showed why they are able to compete as a top ranked team in the state in division B.

The Lions’ Ramsey Walz Jumped for the ball to give Bishop Ryan the first possession. The Mustangs quickly fell behind. The Lions made four points only allowing Surrey to handle the ball for seconds before scoring again.

Walz led the Lions to the lead in the first quarter of the game scoring ten points in the lane and two points at the free throw line. The Mustangs couldn’t quite land their shots with only ten points in the first quarter.

Leading Surrey was Collin Vollmer with two shots from out deep. Brylen Vetter and Gavin Vollmer each made two more points for the Mustangs leaving Surrey down by 17 points by the end of the quarter.

Jett Lundeen made two 3-pointers, both Hayden Seay and Mack Shean each made two points all for the Lions. Bishop Ryan ended the first quarter with a 27-10 lead.

The Lions played through the second quarter just as strong, with the Mustangs landing a few more shots as well. C. Vollmer, for Surrey making eight points, led his team in scoring once again.

The Mustangs also earned points from Bennet Nelson and Gavin Vollmer. Tegan Wallhood brought in the final three points for Surrey in the second quarter.

Bishop Ryan was not done scoring for the second quarter. Using their height to their advantage the Lions rebounded almost all of their own shots and Surrey’s shots. This gave the Lions many more chances to score.

H. Seay for the Lions brought in ten points, followed by Wallz with eight more points. Jack Passa and Izaac Strandlien each brought in three more points.

By the end of the second quarter the Lions had grown a large 53-24 gap over the visiting Mustangs.

By the end of the third period the Lions had subbed in several of their bench players. Peyton Seay, Bishop Ryan Sophomore, made his first points of the game with a 3-pointer for the Lions in the third quarter. The Lions finished the first quarter 76-30 over the Mustangs.

In the final quarter of the game, with a 43 point lead, the Lions used all bench players to finish the game. Justice Lundeen for the Lions had three points and was the only scorer for Bishop Ryan in the final period of the game.

The Mustangs followed suit and with a few minutes left put Surrey bench players in as well. Gavin Nelson for the Mustangs led his team in the fourth quarter with three points. The Lions won 80-38 over the Mustangs.

The Bishop Ryan Lions play TGU at the Towner High School Tuesday.
