Two MSU students named Pinnacle Athletes of the month
Junior forward Caleb Van De Griend has led the way for the Beavers during a memorable start to the season for the Minot State University (MSU) men’s basketball team, while senior forward Journey Miller led the way on the ice during a challenging 10-game stretch for the MSU women’s hockey team.
Both were honored for their effort as Van De Griend was named the Male Athlete of the Month for November while Miller was named the Female Athlete of the Month for November.
The award recognizes the outstanding athletic achievements each month of one male and one female Beaver student-athlete.
Van De Griend helped the now 13th-ranked Beavers to the team’s best start in program history as Minot State went 9-0 in November. During that stretch, Van De Griend averaged team bests of 17.7 points and 11.0 rebounds per game.
That included a career-high 16 rebounds in Minot State’s season-opening 108-99 triple-overtime win over East Central (Okla.) and a career-high 28 points in a 63-56 win at South Dakota Mines. He also shot 73.3 percent from the field (66-of-90) for the month of November, and was named to the NSIC Shining five all three weeks the honor was awarded during the month.
As for Miller, she netted four goals and assisted on three others for the 6th-ranked Minot State women’s hockey team which went 5-4-1 during a road-weary month that saw the Beavers play just four home games.
The Beavers battled four ranked teams and picked up wins against No. 1 Liberty, No. 3 McKendree, and No. 13 Lindenwood on the road, which included an overtime 3-2 win at Lindenwood as Miller scored the game-winning goal with 24 seconds left in overtime.
