Mustangs start Nedrose tourney galloping to win over Cougars

Kari Gibb/MDN Surrey senior Morgan Andersen (10) drives the ball towards the paint while North Prairie junior Ella Pederson (13) works to defend and fouls in the process on Tuesday to kickoff the Nedrose Tournament.

The Nedrose Tournament has been running since 2008 by that name, and much longer with previous nomenclature. The tournament was played Tuesday and will continue Thursday to Friday at Nedrose High School.

Schools in attendance are Surrey, North Prairie (game one), Stanley, Berthold (game two), Garrison, Our Redeemer’s (game three) and the Minot High sophomores with the hosts – Nedrose (game four).

Two games start the tourney on Tuesday, followed by two more on Thursday, with followup games on each side of the bracket on Friday, and Saturday, with the championship game on Saturday at 6 p.m.

Surrey 75, North Prairie 42

In game one of the Nedrose Tournament, the Surrey Mustangs faced off against the North Prairie Cougars to kick things off.

The game was neck and neck for the first quarter with several lead changes. The Mustangs held a 19-18 lead as the second quarter started.

Momentum shifted about halfway through the second quarter of play. Surrey hit several three point shots and had back to back layups with the foul to gain the energy of the gym and build the lead to 44-28 at the half.

The first half momentum that started during the second quarter of play continued through the third quarter as shots fell and defensive rebounding added to the margin. The Mustangs led 62-34 by the start of the final quarter of play.

In the end, the lead established at the end of the first half was enough to carry Surrey to the win and advance in the winner’s bracket for the tournament.

Berthold 66, Stanley 36

The Lady Bombers handled business in game two of the Nedrose Tournament with the win over the neighbors from the west. The 30-point win over Stanley moves Berthold into game seven on Friday against the Surrey Mustangs at 6 p.m..

The Blue Jays will face the Cougars from North Prairie in game five at 3 p.m. in the consolation bracket of play.

Starting at $2.99/week.
