MSU men’s hockey finishes road trip with two wins

PHOENIX, AZ – The Minot State University (MSU) Beavers men’s hockey team fell to Grand Canyon University 0-1 in overtime in game two of a two-game series on Saturday, December 14. The Beavers had an extremely successful road trip in Arizona going 2-0-1 over the last three days.

MSU went 1-0-0 against the University of Arizona and 1-0-1 against Grand Canyon University. The Beaver’s record now moves to 18-2-3, while Grand Canyon University improved to 8-8-1.

The battle between the goalies was the story of the 60 minutes of regulation in this game. MSU’s goaltender, Jake Anthony, tallied ten saves in the first period, five saves in the second period and six saves in the third period, for a total of 21 saves on 21 shots on goal.

Grand Canyon’s goaltender, Dmytro Kubrytskyi, tallied five saves in the first period, 15 saves in the second period and ten saves in the third period, for a total of 30 saves on 30 shots on goal. Regulation would end in a 0-0 tie sending this game into overtime.

Grand Canyon wasted no time in the overtime period as Jack Thomas scored the game winning goal at 51 seconds into the period to secure the 0-1 overtime win.

MSU’s penalty kill unit was strong in this game as the Beavers were 2 for 2 in penalty kills. Anthony was in the net for the Beavers, shutting out Grand Canyon in regulation, and tallying 21 saves on 22 shots on goal.

Following MSU’s three-game road trip in Arizona, the Beavers will be back in action following the New Year at home in a two-game series against Midland University. The two-game series is scheduled for Saturday, January 4, at 3:30 pm, and Sunday, January 5, at 4:30 pm at the Maysa Arena.

Grand Canyon University 2

The Beavers men’s hockey team defeated Grand Canyon University by a final score of 4-2 in game one of a two-game series in Phoenix, Arizona.

MSU opened up the scoring in the first period on a Josh Pederson goal scored at 15:15 into the period to give the Beavers a 1-0 lead. The Beavers quickly took a 2-0 lead on a goal scored by Trenton Curtis at 16:15 into the period.

Grand Canyon cut the Beavers lead down to 2-1 on a buzzer beater goal scored on the power play by Nash Jacobsma at 19:59 into the period.

The Beavers were in full control in the second period. MSU increased their lead to 3-1 on a goal scored by Joey Moffatt at 2:26 into the period. Reece Henry was the next Beaver to find the back of the net, scoring a goal at 10:13 into the period to give MSU a 4-1 lead.

The Beaver’s goaltender, Jake Anthony, held Grand Canyon scoreless in the second period, tallying ten saves on 10 shots on goal.

Grand Canyon scored the lone goal in the third period, scored by Tyler Misialek at 12:40 into the period, to cut the Beavers lead down to 4-2. Anthony went on to shut down Grand Canyon for the remainder of the period to give the Beavers the 4-2 victory.

Ben Johnson, Joey Moffatt, Jay Buchholz, Trenton Curtis and Matt Egan were all credited with assists in the game. Anthony led the way in goal for the Beavers improving his record to 10-2-1 while tallying 22 saves on 24 shots on goal.

MSU Men 6,

University of Arizona 1

TUCSON, AZ – The MSU Beavers men’s hockey team scored six goals in their 6-1 victory over the University of Arizona. This win moves the Beavers to 2-0-0 on the season against Arizona. Minot State now improves to 17-2-2, while the University of Arizona drops to 8-9-0 on the season.

MSU got off to a hot start, taking a 1-0 lead on a goal scored by Logan Rands at 1:38 into the first period. The Beaver’s goaltender, William Dyke, held Arizona scoreless through the first 20 minutes of play, tallying seven saves on seven shots on goal.

The Beavers took a 2-0 lead one minute into the second period on a goal scored by Josh Pederson. Arizona cut down the Beavers lead to 2-1 at 4:51 into the period on a goal scored by Mike Pizzo.

From there on out, the rest of this game would be all MSU. At 5:08 into the period, the Beavers took a 3-1 lead on a goal scored by Trenton Curtis. MSU made it a 4-1 game on a power play goal scored by Joey Moffatt at 6:23 into the period. Josh Pederson scored his second goal of the second period at 8:21 into the period to give the Beavers a 5-1 lead.

Christian Kadolph increased the Beavers lead to 6-1 scoring a power play goal at 7:49 into the third period. Dyke once again held Arizona scoreless, this time in the third period, tallying 12 saves on 12 shots on goal to give Minot State the 6-1 victory over the University of Arizona.

Walker Jerome (2), Christian Kadolph, Matthew Yakubowski, Austin Clyne, Logan Rands (2), Brayden Pawluk, Logan Cyca and Reid Arnold were all credited with assists in the game. Dyke led the way in net for the Beavers, tallying 32 saves on 33 shots on goal to improve his record to 7-0-1.
