Lady Beavers go 1-1 over weekend

ABERDEEN, S.D. –The Minot State University (MSU) women’s basketball team fell short in a 78-52 loss to the Northern State University Wolves on the road Saturday, December 21.

The Beavers (3-10, 2-4) had two players score in double figures, led by Emma Mogen, who had 17 points. Sydney Gustavsson added 14 points and Jaime Skeggs added two points, six rebounds and two steals.

MSU struggled out of the gate, falling behind 20-13 at the end of the first quarter. The Beavers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 43-26 halftime deficit.

Northern State continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 48-28 advantage before Minot State went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a three from Katie Aberle, to trim its deficit to 48-33 with 7:03 to go in the third.

Northern State countered and stretched its lead to 68-42 heading into the fourth. MSU played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 16 points in the paint.

Northern State kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 72-42 advantage before Minot State went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Natalie Holte’s layup, to shrink the deficit to 72-48 with 7:30 to go in the contest.

Northern State responded and outscored the Beavers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 78-52. Minot State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring six of its 10 points in the paint.

MSU Women 65, Minnesota State-Moorhead 62

MOORHEAD, Minn. –Emma Mogen put the MSU women’s basketball team ahead for good with 1:40 to go in the extra period to give the Beavers a 65-62 overtime win against the Minnesota State-Moorhead Dragons on the road Friday, December 20.

The Beavers (3-9, 2-3) had three players score in double figures, led by Sydney Gustavsson, who had 18 points. Mogen added 15 points, five assists and two steals and Jaime Skeggs helped out with 11 points and three steals from the bench.

The MSU offense was impressive from beyond the arc, pouring in 12 threes on 33 attempts. Gustavsson hit six treys for the Beavers in the contest.

The MSU defense held Minnesota State-Moorhead shooters to only 29.7 percent from the field, including 29.4 percent from three-point range. The Beavers also kept Karlee Fisher to 3-of-13 shooting and 10 points in the game.

MSU kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 9-7, then started off the second quarter by going on an 8-0 run to take a 15-9 lead. The Dragons then came roaring back to take a 26-21 lead heading into halftime.

Minnesota State-Moorhead continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 38-27 advantage before MSU went on a 5-0 run to trim its deficit to 38-32 with 2:17 to go in the third.

Minnesota State-Moorhead countered and stretched its lead to 43-35 heading into the fourth. MSU knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 14 total points.

MSU narrowed its deficit to 46-40 before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Gustavsson’s three, to even the score at 46 all with 5:28 to go in the fourth.

Neither team was able to finish the game in regulation and the contest headed to overtime tied at 51-51. MSU fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 16 points.

MSU then took care of business in extra time, outscoring Minnesota State-Moorhead 14-11 to seize victory by the 65-62 final score.
