First weeks of play showcase girls’ prowess

Kari Gibb/MDN Bottineau senior Kyra Beckman (14) battles for the tipoff against the preseason fourth ranked Thompson girls basketball team in the Shootout on the Prairie to start the season. The Lady Braves received votes in the preseason rankings as well.

The Dale Brown Hoopster Classic for girls basketball kicks off on Monday, December 30, at the Minot State University (MSU) Dome. Several local teams will follow up the start of their season at the Shootout on the Prairie held at the Minot Auditorium and the Nedrose Tournament held at Nedrose High with the Hoopster Classic at the MSU Dome.

In the Division A rankings, the Royals won the Shootout on the Prairie and have maintained the top ranking in the state that was voted on in the preseason. South Prairie-Max is 5-0 and off until the 2025 year starts.

Bottineau received votes in the most recent Division A polling and is at 3-2 to start the season. The two losses were in close games with the fourth ranked Tommies and at the second ranked Firebirds in Devils Lake. The Lady Braves will be at the Valley City Shootout this week.

The Lady Cardinals started their season by hosting the Nedrose Tournament. At 2-4 to start the season, Nedrose has jumped into the heat of the season right out of the gate. They will participate in the Hoopster Classic in the next round of games.

In the Division B polling, Kenmare-Bowbells were ranked third in preseason polls and fifth after the first week of play. At 5-2, the Lady Honkers have lost to the top ranked Royals to start the season and the Bottineau Lady Braves with the only losses to Division A teams.

Bishop Ryan sits at 2-4 to start the season and the Lady Lions have faced several teams in the polling. Losses to Kenmare-Bowbells, Hatton/Northwood and South Prairie-Max are early season games to toughen the team.

Our Redeemer’s have started the season at 3-3 with wins at the Nedrose Tournament and losses to Garrison- who received votes in the Division B polling as well as close games with Berthold and Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood have given the Lady Knights battle scars to start the season.

The Lady Mustangs have posted a 4-2 record to start the season with a loss to start the schedule and a loss to Berthold. Surrey has won three in a row since the loss in the semifinals at the Nedrose Tournament.
