Sentinels out, Majettes to play in state qualifying match

The second day of the 2024 Western Dakota Association (WDA) Volleyball Tournament was in full action at Minot High with two matches in the consolation bracket and two semifinal matches played for the chance to win the WDA Championship on Saturday, November 16.

Bismarck High 3, Minot High 1

The home town Majettes started their semifinal match with the second seeds from Bismarck High and the third seeded Minot High girls were upset minded with the 25-21 win in frame one.

The Lady Demons then turned the tables and scored 25-16, 28-26 and 25-23 in frames two through four for the win and a shot at their own crosstown rivals as the top seeds from Bismarck Century also won in their semifinal match.

As a team, the Majettes had 38 blocks at the net with Kynsli Gillmore posting ten and Jayda Schall adding eight. Leah Walter had six kills while Sydney Aberle and Mackenzie Dufner each added five kills.

Dufner had 30 assists of the 37 team total. Raegan Terrel had four of the remaining seven. The Majettes had eight aces with Terrel posting five of them while Nicole Couture had the other three.

The contest was competitive and the volleys lasted longer than usual. Minot High had 90 digs from the extended action. Terrel posted 23 of those while Mya Bogden had 16, Everett Deschamp added 15 and Dufner hit 13 as well. Couture added nine and Gillmoore had six in the effort.

The Majettes had 12 blocks at the net with Aberle posting four of them while Walter and Eve Knutson each had three. Gillmore accounted for the last two.

Minot High will face Bismarck Legacy in the 2 p.m. state qualifying match today, November 16, at the Minot High gym.

Bismarck Century 3, Dickinson 0

The top seeded Bismarck Century played the fourth seeds from Dickinson in the other semifinal of the day. The Lady Patriots posted scores of 25-14, 25-21 and 25-16 for the sweep.

Century will face Bismarck High in the final while the Midgets will take on Jamestown in the state qualifying round for a shot at attending the state tournament next week.

Jamestown 3, Minot North 1

The sixth seeded Minot North played the seventh seeded Jamestown for a shot at qualifying for the 2024 NDHSAA Class A Volleyball Tournament. The Blue Jays jumped out to an early lead with scores of 25-18 and 25-13 in frames one and two for the early 2-0 lead.

The Sentinels took the third frame 25-22 narrowing the Jamestown lead to 2-1 going into the fourth frame. The Blue Jays would take the final frame 25-16 for the 3-1 victory.

Minot North was led by Cadance Shipman with 16 kills, 12 digs, two aces and 1.5 blocks in the effort. McKinnley Kragh added ten kills and an ace while Aven Kelly hit eight kills, six digs and a block.

Brynn Francis added 19 assists, 12 digs, two kills and half a block for the Lady Sentinels. Allie Chell had a pair of kills, 1.5 blocks, four digs and an ace while Kaiya Chell added 14 assists on the night.

Jamestown will face Dickinson today for a shot at qualifying for the state tournament next week.

Bismarck Legacy 3, Williston 0

The fifth seeded Bismarck Legacy volleyball team faced the eighth seeds from Williston. The Lady Sabers scored 25-20, 25-13 and 25-21 over three frames for the sweep. The Coyotes exit the tournament while Legacy will face Minot High for the shot to qualify to attend the state tournament next week.

The state qualifying match between the Sabers and the Majettes is at 2 p.m. at the Minot High gym today, November 16.
