Rugby, Kenmare-Bowbells district volleyball champions

Several districts held their championship games on Monday, November 4, around the area in preparation for region tournaments that will start this week and next.

District 11 Tournament – Velva High School

The Rugby Panthers, seeded first in the district 11 tournament, played the Nedrose Cardinals in the championship game. Nedrose was the sixth seed going into the tournament and played with upsets on the mind and on the courts. The upsets ran out in the title contest as Rugby won 3-1 over Nedrose with scores of 25-20, 25-20, 19-25 and 25-20 for the title.

Bottineau 3, Newburg-Westhope 2

The third seeded Bottineau volleyball team had their work cutout for them against their neighbors from Newburg-Westhope in the consolation bracket for the district 11 tournament.

Bottineau won frame one 25-16 while Newburg-Westhope took frames two and three 25-22 and 25-17 to take a 2-1 lead. Bottineau bounced back for the 25-22 win in frame four and ended the contest with the 15-12 score for the win.

TGU 3, Drake-Anamoose 2

The second seeded team from Drake-Anamoose was unable to keep the fifth seeds from TGU from taking the win in the consolation bracket in district 11 play. The underdogs were behind 2-0 as Drake-Anamoose won frames one and two by scores of 25-19 and 25-21 only to see TGU win three straight with 25-17, 25-22 and 15-12 scores for the win.

District 16 Tournament – Divide County High School

Kenmare-Bowbells 3, Tioga 0

The top seeds from Kenmare-Bowbells showed no rust from the bye in round one of the district 16 volleyball tournament. The Lady Honkers swept 25-20, 25-9 and 25-13 over the third seeds from Tioga.

The win gives the ninth ranked team in the state the district title as they prepare for region play.

Ray 2, Divide County 1

Ray faced the hosting Divide County volleyball team in the first consolation game of the district 16 final day of play and fell behind early when the hosting school took frame one 25-22 for the 1-0 lead.

Ray took the momentum back and won the next three frames 25-14, 25-22 and 25-19 for the win and seeding for the region tournament.

Power Lake-Burke Central 3, Stanley 0

The fourth seeded team from Power Lake-Burke Central swept the sixth seeded Blue Jays from Stanley 25-19, 25-19 and 25-21 in the second consolation bracket game of the district 16 tournament on Monday, November 4, at Divide County high school.
