Royals rebound from scare, face Cardinals for first place

Day two at the 2024 North Dakota High School Activities Association (NDHSAA) Class A and Class B Volleyball State Tournament is in the books. The semifinal games are done and the order of play for each bracket from seventh place to state title matchups is set.

South Prairie-Max will face Langdon Area/Munich for the Class B title at 5 p.m. and the top team from the east- West Fargo Sheyenne- will face the top team from the west- Bismarck Century- in the Class A title game at 7 p.m.

Class B State Tournament at Fargodome

South Prairie-Max 3, Medina/Pingree-Buchanan 1

Medina/Pingree-Buchanan gave South Prairie-Max a scare and a wakeup call with a dominating 25-13 win in the first frame of the Class B semifinal match. The Royals came back to life and took the next three frames 25-21, 25-20 and 25-17 to ink their names onto the stat lines of the brochures for the state title matchup against Langdon Area/Munich.

Medina/Pingree-Buchanan will face Thompson for third place today at the Fargodome.

Langdon Area/Munich 3, Thompson 2

The top ranked Cardinals played the fifth ranked Tommies in the second semifinal of the day at the 2024 NDHSAA Class B State Volleyball tournament where Thompson pushed Langdon Area/Munich to five frames to decide who will face South Prairie-Max in the title match and who will face Medina/Pingree-Buchanan in the third place game.

The top ranked Cardinals survived the five frames 25-19, 19-25, 19-25, 25-23 and 16-14 with the title match pitting top ranked Langdon Area/Munich against second ranked South Prairie-Max for the state championship.

Thompson will play Medina/Pingree-Buchanan for third place today as well at the Fargodome.

Kenmare-Bowbells 3, Central McLean 2

The Lady Honkers had their hands full to get to the fifth place matchup in the Class B consolation bracket. Kenmare-Bowbells posted 25-19, 23-25, 21-25, 25-23 and 15-9 scores for the 3-2 win after five frames and will face Oak Grove today.

Central McLean will tackle Dickinson Trinity for seventh place today as well.

Oak Grove 3, Dickinson Trinity 2

Both games in the consolation bracket went five frames and could have tipped towards either team. Oak Grove edged Dickinson Trinity 20-25, 25-21, 25-22, 18-25 and 15-8 to earn a shot at fifth place against Kenmare-Bowbells.

Dickinson Trinity will tackle Central McLean for seventh place today at the Fargodome.

Class A State Tournament at Fargodome

WF Sheyenne 3, Shanley 1

The top seeded West Fargo Sheyenne volleyball team faced a familiar foe in the semifinal match at the NDHSAA Class A Volleyball State Tournament. The third seeded Shanley team upset the second seeds from the west for the title shot.

Sheyenne recorded 25-11, 25-17, 15-25 and 26-24 wins over four frames to play for the state title. They will face the top seeds from the west in the championship game today at the Fargodome.

Shanley will take on the third seeds from the west for third place in a battle of ‘three seeds for third’ today as well.

Century 3, Legacy 0

In mirror image brackets in semifinal action, the top west seeds from Bismarck Century faced the third seeds from Bismarck Legacy for a shot at the Class A State Volleyball Championship. Century posted 25-22, 25-21 and 25-14 scores for the sweep and the title matchup.

Legacy will face Shanley in the ‘battle of the threes for third’ at the Fargodome today as well.

Bismarck High 3, Jamestown 0

Both games in the consolation bracket pitted the second seeds against the fourth seeds with east being in one bracket and west being in the opposite bracket.

In the west bracket, Bismarck High- second seed- faced Jamestown- fourth seed- for a shot at the fifth place matchup. Bismarck High swept with 25-22, 25-21 and 25-19 scores.

The Demons will play Fargo Davies for fifth place while Jamestown will tackle West Fargo Horace for seventh place today at the Fargodome.

The fourth seed from the east swept the second seed from the east in the consolation bracket 25-18, 26-24 and 25-17 in the end. Fargo Davies will face Bismarck High for fifth place while West Fargo Horace will take on Jamestown for seventh place today in the final day of the state tournament at the Fargodome.
