Royals finish second, Honkers fifth at state volleyball tourney
FARGO – The final games of the 2024 NDHSAA Class A and Class B Volleyball State Tournament took place on Saturday, November 23, at the Fargodome.
The Class B title game was the top seeded Langdon Area/Munich against the second seeded South Prairie-Max team while the Class A title game was the top eastern seeds from West Fargo Sheyenne against the top western seeds from Bismarck Century.
After the action was complete, Azjiah Trader from South Prairie-Max was the 2024 NDHSCA Class B Volleyball Senior Athlete of the Year while Alexa Killoran from West Fargo Sheyenne was the 2024 NDHSCA Class A Volleyball Senior Athlete of the Year.
Keturah Schwarzrock from South Prairie-Max was named the 2024 NDHSCA Class B Volleyball Coach of the Year while Leah Newton of West Fargo Sheyenne was the 2024 NDHSCA Class A Volleyball Coach of the Year.
Class B – Championship
Langdon Area/Munich 3, South Prairie-Max 1
The Lady Royals jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a 25-15 win to start the title game over the top ranked Langdon Area/Munich. The Cardinals tightened their belts and rolled to 25-16, 25-15 and 25-16 wins in frames two through four to claim the 2024 title and hoist the trophy as a team.
3rd Place
Medina/Pingree-Buchanan 3, Thompson 0
The third ranked Thunder scored 25-23, 25-15 and 25-22 frames for the sweep over the Tommies in the third place matchup at the Fargodome.
5th Place
Kenmare-Bowbells 3,
Oak Grove 2
The fourth ranked Oak Grove girls gave the Lady Honkers all they could handle. In the end, Kenmare-Bowbells battled through five frames with 25-22, 12-25, 23-25, 25-18 and 15-10 scores for the fifth place state finish.
7th Place
Dickinson Trinity 3, Central McLean 2
Dickinson Trinity lost the first frame and rebounded as Central McLean would not quit. Trinity worked through scores of 21-25, 25-12, 25-23, 18-25 and 15-12 to place seventh at the 2024 state tournament.
Class A – Championship
Century 3, WF Sheyenne 1
The top team from the Western Dakota Association (WDA) side of the state was able to record 25-21, 18-25, 25-15 and 25-22 scores over the top eastern team for the win. Bismarck Century rolled after swapping wins in frames one and two.
West Fargo Sheyenne nabbed the Senior Athlete of the Year and the Coach of the Year while their opponents hoisted the state championship trophy as a team in exchange.
3rd Place
Shanley 3, Legacy 1
In the battle between eastern three seed and western three seed for third place, Shanley was able to survive the 1-1 battle to start the match to win frames three and four for the win.
The Deacons scored 25-14, 25-27, 25-17 and 25-18 to end the tournament in third place.
5th Place
Fargo Davies 3,
Bismarck High 0
The fourth seeds from the east scored 25-20, 25-19 and 25-18 wins for the sweep over the second seed from the west. Fargo Davies had the only sweep of the day at the Fargodome over Bismarck High.
7th Place
WF Horace 3, Jamestown 2
The fourth seeds from the west- Jamestown- wanted to upset the second seeds from the east- West Fargo Horace- for the seventh place finish. The Hawks weathered the storm with scores of 25-15, 20-25, 17-25, 25-21 and 15-9 for the win over the Blue Jays at the Fargodome.
