Lady Beavers take final game of series with Liberty

Kari Gibb/MDN MSU senior Makena Welby (27) - in earlier action this season - scored her first goal of the season in game two of three on the road. The Lady Beavers won game three on Saturday, November 23, in Lynchburg, Virginia against Liberty University after dropping game two.

LYNCHBURG, VA. – The Minot State University (MSU) Beavers women’s hockey team defeated #1 Liberty University in the final game of a three-game series on Saturday, November 23, with the 2-1 win. The Beavers come out of this three game series 1-1-1 and currently hold a record of 11-5-1. With the loss, Liberty falls to 11-2-0.

Liberty got on the board first 52 seconds into the first period on a goal scored by Haley Battles. The Beavers tied the game up at 1-1 at 12:20 into the period on a goal scored by Krissy Rink.

Both teams were scoreless in the second period as both goalies had an impressive period. MSU’s goalie and Minot High alum, freshman Jillian Ackerman, had 18 saves on 18 shots on goal. Liberty’s goalie, Alexandra Keith, had eight saves on eight shots on goal.

The Beavers scored the lone goal in the third period at 17:32 into the period scored by

Abby Tallman to take a 2-1 lead. A 2-1 lead would prove to be enough to secure the victory as Ackerman held Liberty scoreless in the third period with 13 saves on 13 shots on goal.

Olivia Kirwan and Journey Miller were credited with assists in the game. The Beaver’s goaltender, Ackerman, led the way in net for MSU tallying 45 saves on 46 shots on goal to secure her first win of the year.

The Beavers will be back in action in a two-game series against the University of Jamestown in Jamestown, North Dakota. Game one is scheduled for Friday, December 6, at 7:00 pm, and game two is scheduled for Saturday, December 7, at 3:30 pm.

MSU Women 2

The MSU Beavers women’s hockey team fell to #1 Liberty University 2-5 in game two of a three-game series. With the loss, the Beavers fall to 10-5-1, while Liberty improves to 11-1-0.

The Beavers got the scoring started in the first period taking a 1-0 lead on a goal scored by

Makena Welby, her first goal of the year, at 13:05 into the period. Liberty tied the game up at 1-1 on a power play goal scored by Madison Glynn at 18:13 into the period.

Liberty took a 1-2 lead at 0:46 into the second period on a goal scored by Zosia Adamek. Liberty increased their lead to 1-3 at 11:55 into the period on a goal scored by Samantha Peebles.

Liberty made the game 1-4 at 13:11 into the period on a power play goal scored by Sophia Adamek. MSU cut into Liberty’s lead on a short handed goal scored by Paige Kozak at 17:46 into the period to make the score 2-4.

Liberty scored the lone goal in the third period scored by Brooke Olson at 6:35 into the period to make the score 2-5.

Cameron Schmidt and Makenna Beard were credited with assists in the game.
