Lady Beavers basketball falls on road at Jamestown

JAMESTOWN – A strong start by the host Jimmies proved too much to overcome for the Minot State University (MSU) women’s basketball team, which fell 81-64 to future Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) foe Jamestown on Tuesday night, November 19.

Sydney Gustavsson led the way for the Beavers (1-4 overall) with 17 points, while Lara Dobbins added 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

“Offensively, shots didn’t fall for us,” said MSU head coach Ryan Clark. “We simply had too many defensive lapses that resulted in way too many points for Jamestown. Fortunately for us, we have an opportunity to bounce back on our home court.”

The Lady Beavers are back in action Thursday night after winter travel conditions postponed their next game, making their home debut when they host Mayville State at the MSU Dome in a men’s and women’s basketball doubleheader for home debuts for each team.

The MSU men play host to Jamestown at 5 p.m. followed by the women.

Shooting woes for MSU early, and a much hotter hand for the Jimmies (4-1), set the tone as the Beavers hit 29 percent from the field (9-of-31) in the first half, falling into what proved to be an insurmountable hole.

Jamestown shot 15-of-32 (47 percent) to build a lead it never relinquished.

Maya Aguilar gave the Beavers a 4-3 edge three minutes into the action before Jamestown battled its way in front with a 10-3 run and never trailed again.

Not that the Beavers didn’t battle, as a Dobbins bucket with 8:07 left in the first half cut the difference to 22-19, but Jamestown answered with a 15-4 run and maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

Starting at $2.99/week.
