Despite tough defense, MSU women drop game on road
BILLINGS, MT — The Minot State University (MSU) women’s basketball team held Montana State-Billings to just 38.3 percent shooting from the field, but fell 65-51 to the Yellowjackets on the road Saturday, November 23.
The Beavers (1-6) had two players score in double figures, led by Lara Dobbins, who had 13 points. Maya Aguilar added 11 points and Emma Mogen added nine points.
MSU’s defense held Montana State-Billings to only 22.2 percent from beyond the arc in addition to the lower two point range. .
MSU struggled out of the gate, falling behind 19-11 at the end of the first quarter. The Beavers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 40-21 halftime deficit.
MSU came out of halftime on fire, going on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Mogen, to trim its deficit to 40-28 with 6:43 to go in the third. Montana State-Billings countered and stretched its lead to 52-35 heading into the fourth.
MSU knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 14 total points. MSU kept the Yellowjackets from increasing their lead before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Dobbins’ layup, to shrink the deficit to 54-44 with 6:40 to go in the contest.
Montana State-Billings responded and outscored the Beavers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 65-51. MSU took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring ten of its 16 points in the paint.
