Washburn edges Nedrose 3-2
In rare Monday evening high school volleyball action, the Battle of the Cardinals took place at Nedrose High School as the local Cardinals hosted the Washburn Cardinals for bird bragging rights. The visiting birds clawed back from trailing for the 3-2 win in the end.
Nedrose got off to a stellar start in the competitive action winning frames one and two by the same score- 25-22 to take the 2-0 lead. The visiting Cardinals showed patience and determination to not go away without a fight.
Washburn won frame three 25-22 and frame four 25-21 to even the match at 2-2 going into the final frame of the game.
The visiting Cardinals got off to an early lead in frame five. The hosting Cardinals dug out of the hole and tied the final frame 12-12 until Washburn edged Nedrose to take the win 15-12 in the end.
Nedrose senior Lilly Nelson had 21 kills, 23 digs and six aces on the night. Fellow senior Kenna Huff had 20 digs, three aces while senior MaHalle Lizotse added eight kills in the effort. Nedrose freshman Brynley Bertsch racked up 33 assists in the game while senior Cambree Lemasters added 19 digs for the hosting Cardinals.
The local Cardinals have six seniors, one junior, one sophomore to go with a pair of freshmen and should bounce back for the remainder of the season. The visiting Cardinals have nine seniors, two juniors, a sophomore along with one freshman and their resilient playing style showed their experience level as they would not give up on any volley set in the game.
Nedrose (5-10) travels to Stanley today to play the Blue Jays before hosting Bottineau on Monday, October 14, at Nedrose High School next week.
Washburn (7-4) hosts Drake-Anamoose on Thursday, October 10, before traveling to Garrison on Tuesday, October 15, next week.
