Minot High’s Diehl, Schaeffer advance to state semifinals

GRAND FORKS – The 2024 NDHSAA Boys State Tennis Individuals Tournament began on Friday at Grand Forks Choice Health & Fitness. Minot High had two singles players competing, senior Nolan Callahan, and eighth grader Nolan Moore. In doubles play, Minot High had two teams competing, senior Aidan Diehl with senior Grayson Schaeffer, and junior Oliver Thompson with senior Thomas Griffith.

In the first match of the day for doubles play, Diehl and Schaeffer ranked west one-seed played east eight-seed Kevin Martinez and Maxwell Mecham from Grand Forks Red River. Diehl and Schaeffer came out on top beating Martinez and Mecham 6-2 and 6-0.

Diehl and Shaeffer went on to face Comins and Anderson in the second round and avenged their teammates beating them with scores of 6-4 and 6-2.

In the singles bracket, west five-seed Nolan Callahan faced east four-seed Momin Durrani of West Fargo Sheyenne in the first round. Callahan fell to Durrani with scores of 6-1 and 6-4. Callahan went on to face Joshua Wilkinson from Fargo South and won with scores of 6-4 and 6-1. Callahan ultimately lost to Jared Christen of Mandan in the third round with scores of 6-0 and 6-2.

Nolan Moore, the west seven-seed faced the east two-seed Aodh Murphy from Grand Forks Red River in the first round. Moore lost to Murphy 6-2 and 6-0. Moore went on to face Leighton Heick of West Fargo Sheyenne in the losing bracket and lost with scores of 6-4 and 6-2.

In the first doubles match for west five-seed Thompson and Griffith, they faced east four-seed Alex Comins and Garnett Anderson from Wahpeton. Thompson and Griffith fell to Comins and Anderson with scores of 3-6, 7-5, and 10-5. In the losing bracket, Thompson and Griffith faced Martinez and Mecham of Grand Forks Red River and lost by two scores of 6-2.

Diehl and Shaeffer are set to play today at 11 a.m. in Grand Forks against the east two-seed Brandt Aslakson and Andrew Rexin of West Fargo Sheyenne in state semifinals action.
