Minot High duo take third at state

GRAND FORKS – After two days of play at the North Dakota High School Activities Association (NDHSAA) State Boys Tennis Tournament in the individual sessions for doubles play, Minot High seniors Grayson Schaeffer and Aidan Diehl successfully won third place on Saturday, October 12, in Grand Forks.

The duo started the doubles bracket as the top seed from the Western Dakota Association (WDA) side of the bracket and faced the eighth seed from the east- Grand Forks Red River pair Kevin Martinez and Maxwell Mecham- winning 6-2, 6-0 to move forward on Friday, October 11.

The pair next faced the fourth seeds from the east, Wahpeton duo Alex Comings and Garnett Anderson. The Magicians won 6-4, 6-2 to advance to play on Saturday.

On Saturday morning, October 12, Schaeffer and Diehl faced the second seeded team from the east, West Fargo Sheyenne pair Brandt Aslakson and Andrew Rexin in the semifinal round. The WF Sheyenne team pushed the match to three sets and won 6-1, 3-6 and 6-2 for the right to play for the state championship. Aslakson and Rexin would win the state title over Bismarck Legacy duo Caleb Johnson and Cooper Miller who lost to the Minot High pair at the WDA tournament.

The Magicians played for third place and faced the fifth seeds from the east, the Fargo North team of Drew Burris and Nicholas Webb. Schaeffer and Diehl won 6-1, 6-3 to take third in state with their only loss to the eventual state champions on Saturday.

The Minot High boys tennis team posted a 19-5 overall record, a 7-0 WDA season record, were the WDA regular season champions, third place as a team at the WDA tournament, fourth place as a team at the NDHSAA state tournament, had five All-Conference players (Schaeffer, Diehl, Thomas Griffith, Nolan Callahan and Oliver Thompson) and two All-State players (Schaeffer and Diehl).
