Beavers take down Midland in both games

The Minot State University (MSU) Beavers women’s hockey team took down Midland in a shutout 3-0 on Sunday, October 27, to sweep the weekend series and improve their record to 6-2-0.

Morgan Baker’s flawless performance in goal for the Beavers was the story of the game for MSU as Baker shutout a strong fourth ranked Midland team with 39 saves on 39 shots on goal.

The first period was a quiet one for both teams as the goalies for both MSU and Midland kept the score at 0-0.

Mia Mckee got the scoring started at 10:37 into the second period to put the Beavers ahead 1-0. Only 2 minutes and 7 seconds later, Paige Kozak found the back of the net to increase the Beavers lead to 2-0.

Paige Ackerman added the Beavers third goal of the game on a power play at 11:52 into the third period.

Olivia Opheim, Addison Dyck, Krissy Rink and Makenna Beard were all credited with assists.

The Beavers penalty kill unit was strong in the game as Midland was 0 for 4 on the power play opportunities.

MSU will be back in action against #11 Lindenwood University on Friday, November 1, at 3:45 pm, and Saturday, November 2, at 3:45 pm at the Maysa Arena.

MSU Women 4, Midland University 1

On Saturday, October 26, MSU took down fourth ranked Midland University 4-1 in regulation at the Maysa Arena for the Beaver’s fifth straight win.

Coming off of their two-game sweep against the University of Jamestown two weekends ago, the Beavers came out firing against a strong Midland team, as Journey Miller scored her first of two goals on the day in the final few minutes of the opening period.

Midland knotted the game up at 1-1 on a power play goal scored by Keagan Shearer at 13:48 into the second period. Minot State answered back a couple minutes later with a goal scored by Payton Lang at 16:42 into the second period to make it 2-1.

The Beavers continued the goal scoring quickly in the third period with a goal scored by Mia Mckee at 3:56 into the period to make it 3-1.

Miller put the game on ice with an empty-net goal in the final minutes of the third period for her second goal on the day to make it 4-1.

MSU goalie Morgan Baker made 29 saves on 30 shots on goal to secure the victory.
