Sentinels have top two at West Region Championship

Kari Gibb/MDN Minot North senior Carlie Brown, seen here teeing off at the Minot High Invite at the Vardon Golf Course, shot a 92 and tied for 12th at the 2024 West Region Championship at Prairie West Golf Course in Mandan Monday, in preparation for the state meet next week.

MANDAN — Minot North junior Emersyn Kopp went to Mandan to play and her 78 was the best score of the day on the firm course and won the ‘Medalist’ title for the 2024 West Region Championships at Prairie West Golf Course.

Fellow junior from Minot North, Kinzy Welstad shot an 81 to tie with one other golfer for second place behind Kopp for the 1-2 Sentinels finish. As a team, Minot North was one stroke behind the home course winners from Mandan with the Braves recording a 350 compared to the Sentinels 351 on the day.

“Really proud of the entire team,” said Minot North head coach Michael DeLorme. “They battled hard and hit some really good golf shots throughout today. They put themselves into position to have a chance at the end and I think it’s an experience we can take a lot away from.”

In addition to Kopp and Welstad, Minot North senior Carlie Brown shot a 92 for 12th place. Sentinels freshman Katelyn Bast carded a 100 to finish at 27th, junior Ally Larson recorded a 105 for 43rd and junior Abigail Speer came in at 108 for 46th place for the team.

“After missing out last year by a shot, it had been their mission all year to get there,” said DeLorme. “We really believed we could compete today and showed that we could.”

Minot High junior Katie Thomas played a great round and came in at 92 for 12th place with Brown. Minot High freshman Kenadee Burud carded a 100 for 27th, senior Samantha Lentz and sophomore Taylor Deslauriers both were in at 101 for 31st and junior Maura Alexander posted a 114 for 55th place for the Majettes who missed qualifying as one of the top six teams for state by nine strokes.

“We really struggled to handle the fast greens today,” said Minot High head coach Scott Foltz. “Lots of three putts for the squad.”

The 2024 NDHSAA Class A Girls Golf Tournament will be Monday, September 30, and Tuesday, October 1, at the same location in Mandan on the same course. Having the regional at Prairie West did give all those participating in the event next week.

“It will be fun to get out with the ‘East’ next week,” said DeLorme. “This is a tough, firm course and I think we will have a chance to show some experience in it.”
