Habaneros escaped close call with win over ‘Bees

The Minot Honeybees (3-10) began their four game home stand against the Mankato Habaneros (11-2) on Monday, July 1, six days after playing their first official home game at Corbett Field in Minot.

The Habaneros came into the game off the backs of a seven game winning streak and the Honeybees won their last game. This was the first of two doubleheaders between the clubs on back to back days and was broadcast on ESPN +. Minot tied the game at 5-5 before Mankato added two runs at the top of the eighth inning for the 7-5 win.

The Honeybees took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first innings as Cairah Curran scored on a Jackie Albrecht put out.

The Mankato Habaneros would respond in the top of the third innings with three runs of their own to take a 3-1 lead in the top of the second innings.Serena Timmer scored the first run off an Indigo Fish double to left field. Riley Stiles and Fish would later score off Joscelyn Bennett put out.

The Honeybees scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning to lead by a 4-3 heading into the third inning. Peyton Whitehead scored on Skyler Dietz ‘single near shortstop. Caitlyn Dannenfelzer and Curran on Sidney Farmer double to left field.

The Habaneros were resilient in their push to score and delivered two more runs in the top of the third inning to make it a 5-4 score, taking the lead for the second time in the ball game.

The Honeybees squared all scores 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh inning as Josie Buhr scored from third base on a fielder’s choice play.

The final two runs of the game came as Amy White scored an unearned run to help the Habaneros when they took the lead 6-5 in the top of the eighth inning. The Habaneros seventh and final run came when Paige Zender scored as Jessa Snippes was walked with the bases loaded.

The Honeybees batted 7-for-32 and had three errors in the game. Curran scored two runs, had an RBI and walked twice. Dietz batted 2-for-5 and had a RBI. Farmer batted 2-for-5 and had two RBI. Shayna Myshrall batted 1-for-4 and walked once. Buhr batted 1-for-2, scored a run and walked twice. Whitehead scored a run and walked once. Dannenfelzer batted 1-for-3, scored a run and walked once. Dominique Baker walked once. Trinity Gregg walked onced . Jackie Albrecht walked once.

Kierra Fournier pitched three innings, allowed seven hits, five runs, walked three and struck out three batters. Jasmine Blizzard pitched four innings, allowing four hits, walked one and struck out five batters. Albrecht pitched one inning, allowed one hit, two runs and walked two.

The Habaneros batted 12-for-37 and had zero errors in the game. White batted 1-for-5 and scored one run. Madelyn Birling walked once. Emma Lee batted 2-for-3 and walked onced. Zender batted 1-for-3, scored two runs, had a home run, had one RBI and walked twice. Timmer scored one run and walked twice. Snippes batted 2-for-3 , scored one run and had a RBI. Fish batted 3-for-5, scored two runs and had a RBI. Bennett had 2-for-4 and had a RBI. Leitheiser batted 1-for-4 and had an RBI.

Snippes pitched three and two-third innings, allowed six hits, five runs, walked four and struck out four batters.

Riley Stiles pitched four and one-third innings, allowed one hit, walked five and struck out three batters.

The second game of the doubleheader started at 8:30 p.m. after the first game and was over after the print deadline.
