Palmer, Bottineau coach top Class B All State list

Champions are made in practice and are revealed when the lights are on and when the game counts, they embrace the moment by giving all they’ve got.

The 2024 Class B Boys Golf All-State Team was highlighted by Bottineau senior Max Palmer and Beulah senior Champ Hettich.

Palmer is the senior athlete of the 2024 NDHSAA Boys Class B All State team in golf. At the state finals he finished in first place with an overall score of 86 (+). Palmer scored 35 (+1) in the first round and went 53 (+2) in the second round. With the new addition of his 2024 honors, Palmer has now made three North Dakota All-State Golf Teams. Palmer is also the NDHSCA POWERade Outstanding Senior Athlete winner.

Palmer began his season of excellence by placing first at the Bottineau Boys Varsity Meet with a 79 (+7) score. This performance was followed up by a tie for second place at the Glenburn Boys Golf Invitational.

From there on we would witness a string of performances that made way for his rightful claim on the all-state golf team. Palmer finished first at the Rugby Boys Varsity Meet in a sign of things to come.

At the very next meet, Regional 4 Individual Qualifier, Palmer went under par with a 70 (-2) score to claim first place. The Bottinieau senior remained sharp a week later at the HWC Boys Invitational where he finished first with a 74 (+2) score.

Mr. Consistency showed up again as Palmer won the Northern Tier Classic and the Dunseith Boys Invitational, scoring 134 (-2) and 70 (E), respectively. At the Regional Four Individual Qualifier #2 placed first with a 66(-6) score, while Bottineau finished first overall with a score of 327 (+39).

After placing second at the Westhope- Newburg Boys Invitational, Palmer went back to his old tricks, winning the Velva Boys Invitational while leading Bottineau to first in overall team score. Palmers placed first at the NDHSAA Class B Region 4 meet with an individual score of 71 (-1), while helping Bottineau to a second place finish in the team points.

Palmer’s season was fulfilled by being the number one finisher at the 2024 NDHSAA Boys Class B State Championship.

Beulah senior Champ Hettich wasted no time starting his 2024 campaign, scoring 68 (-2) at the Beulah Invite which was the first meet of the season. Hettich followed up this performance with a second place finish in a strong field at the Northern Tier Classic, scoring 141 (+5).

The skilled golfer went under par again at the Heart River Invite, placing first with an individual score of 71(-1) and pacing the Beulah team to first place in the team rankings. Hettich was again exceptional at the Bowman Qualifier, going 68 (-4) and finishing second behind the red-hot hand of Bowman County senior Karsen Kulseth 66 (-6). In the final ramp-up before the state championship, he placed first at the NDHSAA Class B Region 5 meet, with a 74 (+2) he was able to lead Beulah to a third place finish at the event.

While his 2024 season was not quite as long as some of the other competitors, Hettich stayed focused on the things he’s in control of and delivered when he was called upon. At the state meet Hettich did deliver on the skillset he displayed in the regular season as he was atop the leaderboard after the first round of play.

Hettich finished the state championship meet tied for second place with a 88 (+3) score and bright future ahead of him. He is no stranger to the state championship competition as he was the winner of the 2022 NDHSAA Boys Class B State Championship.

Hettich is the “Region 5 Golf Champion and Region 5 Senior Athlete of the Year” as announced by Beulah Public Schools.

The other members of the 2024 Class B Boys Golf All-State Team are: Kindred junior Hunter Bindas, Grafton sophomore Reggie Rice, Mayville-Portland-Clifford-Galesburg junior Cody Fugleberg, Oak Grove freshman Andrew Bilstad, Oak Grove sophomore Aidan Zuger,, Dickinson Trinity senior Cade Fitterer, North Border junior Grant Cosley, Central Cass junior Jake Thompson and Oak Grove sophomore William Olson.
