Sentinel junior Williams III wins triple jump
Eleven teams made the trip to Dickinson State University for the West Region Track and Field meet on Friday, May 17, and the highlight for one team was Minot North junior John Williams III as he continued his preparation to repeat as the state champion in the triple jump.
Williams III hit 44-9 at the meet for first place. In second place, Minot High junior Grayson Schaeffer was second in the triple jump with a 43-1 mark. The Magicians would finish the meet in fourth place with 86 team points for the boys and eighth with 42 points for the girls, while the Sentinels would be 11th for both teams.
Bismarck High was first for both boys at 185 points and 165 for the girls. Bismarck Legacy would be in second place for both teams as well with scores of 115 and 108 for boys and girls respectively. Third place for the boys was Bismarck Century at 106 points while the Dickinson girls were third with 97 points.
In the long jump, Schaeffer finished second with a 22-8 leap while Minot High senior Logan Conklin was tenth with a 21-7 mark. Williams III was 13th at 21-4 and senior Colby Albertson was 16th for Minot High and qualified for state. Conklin was also second in the high jump with a 6-4 mark.
Minot High senior Kobe Irmen placed second in the discus with a 160-6 mark and seventh in the shot put at 48-feet, both state qualifying marks. Minot High sophomore Blake Anderson was fourth in the discus and fifth in the shot put with 157-2 and 48-3 marks respectively. Magicians senior Jobe Rystedt was eighth in the shot put while junior Lincoln Brooks was 12th in the discus, both with state qualifying marks.
Junior Dylan Jackson finished third in the 800-meters with a time of 2:02.98 while fellow junior Nathan Wistisen was fifth with a 2:04.32 time, both qualifying for state for Minot High. Fellow Magician junior Benjamin Harris was fourth in the 1600 with a 4:25.99 time.
On the girls side, the top finisher was Minot North sophomore McKinnley Kragh who finished second in the pole vault with a personal best 9-foot mark. Minot High senior Makayla Whitfield finished in third place in the 100 with a 12.67 time while sophomore teammate Monica Boakye was 15th with a 13.18 time, both state qualifying marks.
Minot High junior Haleigh Carr was fourth in the long jump with a 17-4.5 mark and seventh in the triple jump with a 35-6 leap. Fellow Majette junior Haley Conklin was tenth in the triple jump at 35-1, both state qualifying marks. Minot North sophomore Jaelynn Zarr was 13th in the long jump and 18th in the triple with state qualifying distances. Majettes Whitfield also qualified in the long jump.
Minot High junior Sydney Aberle finished in fourth place of the 100 hurdles with a 16.09 and 17th in the 300 hurdles to qualify for state in both. Teammate and sophomore Eve Knutson was sixth in the 300 hurdles with a 49.25 time and fellow Majette junior Haley Conklin qualified for state in the 100 hurdles with a sixth place time of 16.74 at the meet. Minot High eighth grader Kaylee Jackson finished sixth in the 1600 with a state qualifying 5:32.47 time.
Minot North junior Josie Rystedt qualified for state with her 34-4 toss in the shot put for eighth place at the meet.
