District tourney begins for area teams
Bishop Ryan girls outlast Surrey
The game boiled down to two styles of play between the Bishop Ryan Lions girls and the Surrey Mustangs. Speed and shooting for the Lions and defense, rebounding and patience for the Mustangs.
Surrey started the game with their tempo and held the Lions to minimal offensive output in the second quarter.
The Lions mounted a run to build a 17-13 lead. Patience worked, along with second chance shots for Surrey as they kept pace into the final seconds of the first half. The Mustangs took a 22-17 lead into the break.
The second half started with the Lions tightening their defense to even the score.
Surrey was held to five points in the third quarter and 7 in the fourth while the Lions tallied 13 and 7 respectively.
Up 36-34, a Tochi Udekwe steal helped keep the Lions in front with 11.9 seconds left. Junior Alena Johannsen led all scoring with 15 points for Bishop Ryan while junior Morgan Anderson hit for 13 points for the Mustangs.
Bishop Ryan advances to take on TGU, while Surrey will face Velva in the opening game of the consolation bracket. Tip for the latter game is at 3 p.m.
Titans take win over Aggies
The TGU Titans started and ended the game in the same fashion – shooting the ball. The Velva (12-9) Aggies played scrappy, keeping the game close at times but ended up falling short 63-39 in the end.
Senior Natalie Nechiporenko lead scoring for the Aggies with 11, and seven other Velva players added to the scoring.
Junior Ashley Martodam hit 22 for the Titans while senior Sophie Bachmeier added a dozen. Freshman Addison Neshem notched 10 points as well. Seven TGU players scored as the Titans advanced.
With the win TGU will take on Bishop Ryan in the first-semifinal, while Surrey will take on Velva.
Our Redeemer’s Christian School moving on
Ball movement and shooting lifted the Knights over the Hornets as the top-seeded Our Redeemer’s Christian School girls earned the win over the Harvey-Wells County (6-15) girls in district play 60-34.
While the Hornets kept the effort high, they were unable to keep pace with the Knights. Freshman Braylee Keller found the basket for 12 points to lead scoring for the Harvey-Wells County girls. Eight Hornets scored.
Six Knights tallied points, three in double figures. Senior Maya Vibeto led all scoring with 23 while sophomore Kadyn Braun added 19.Junior Mikayla Altringer had 10 in the win.
ORCS advances to take on four-seed Berthold, while Harvey-Wells County will take on Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood in the second game of the consolation bracket.
Hard fought game goes to Bombers
The Berhold Bombers battled the Mavericks from Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood for the chance to continue for a shot at the district championship and the matchup did not disappoint.
Tough defense by both teams kept scoring low through the first half. The Bombers managed to hit three 3-point shots that led to a 20-11 lead to end the second quarter.
The second half had more buckets for the Bombers and some shooting woes for the Hornets. Berthold outscored the Mavericks 24-14 in the second half to seal the 44-25 win.
Senior Jamie Thompson led scoring for Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood with 12 points while senior Mya Neshem tallied 11 for Berthold. The Bombers had six players scoring points and the Mavericks five players contributing.
Berthold will take on top-seed ORCS, while MLS will take on Harvey-Wells County in the consolation bracket.
