Magi power past Demons in shutout win

Adam Papin/MDN Minot High’s Rylan Roteliuk skates on a breakaway towards the goal during the first period of the Magicians’ game with the Bismarck High Demons on Tuesday night.

With four minutes left in the second period, Minot High’s boys’ hockey team went on the power play up 2-0 over the visiting Bismarck High Demons, after Dylan Schneider was called for boarding, a five-minute major.

The Magi made the most of the powerplay, as Easton Panasuk and Carter Coleman both scored power play goals to blow the game wide open after two periods of play. After going into the second intermission with a 4-0 lead, the Magi added three goals in the third period to grab a 7-0 conference win.

Finlee Bentz, who scored 2:13 seconds into the third period on an assist from Aidan Diehl, was fired up after the game.

“Our goal is to win every game and destroy our enemies,” said Bentz. “We forecheck hard and we run our systems. We work hard, get pucks deep, go to work and score goals.”

And the Magi have scored a lot of goals over their last three games, defeating Bismarck Legacy, Jamestown and Bismarck High by a combined score of 18-2. Minot High is spreading the scoring around as well. Against the Demons, seven different Magi scored goals, and six additional players had assists in the game.

In addition to goals by Pansuk, Coleman and Bentz, Minot High got goals from Jersey Abrahamson, Ben Halland, Teegan Strand and Rylan Roteliuk. Assists came from Aidan Diehl with two, Abrahamson, Mackley Morelli, Cole Richeson, Andrew Kohlman and Jaxson Radke.

The Magi outshot the Demons 36-9, including 17-1 in the third period.

Carson Erickson finished with nine saves for the Magi, while Kaeden Aberle also saw time in net for Minot High during the third period. Ty Shea played the entire game for Bismarck High, allowing seven goals and registering 29 saves.

“Coach gives us a kind of good pregame speech and the boys go to work,” said Bentz.

With the win Minot improves to 5-1 in the Western Dakota Association (WDA) standings, and the Magi stay tied atop the standings with Bismarck Legacy. Both teams have 15 points. Last week, Minot High crushed the Sabers 8-2 in Bismarck.

Bismarck High drops to 1-7-0-1 overall (1-5-0-1 WDA).

Up next for the Magi will be a trip to Roseau, Minn. from Dec. 26-28 for the Roseau Holiday Classic, before returning home for a matchup with WDA rival Bismarck Century on Tuesday Jan. 2, 2024.

Starting at $2.99/week.
