Papin named sports editor at The Minot Daily News

The Minot Daily News has promoted Adam Papin to the position of sports editor, effective immediately.

“We’re ecstatic to promote Adam from sports reporter to sports editor,” said The Minot Daily News publisher Bob Patchen. “I’m excited to see what Adam is going to bring to the table as our sports editor, and expand our already outstanding local sports coverage.”

Prior to joining The Minot Daily News in May, Papin was editor of The Paulding County Progress, a weekly newspaper in Paulding County, Ohio. In that role, he was responsible for both the news and sports editorial content, as well as providing leadership to staff and freelance writers and photographers.

“The Paulding County Progress was a community newspaper,” said Papin. “My philosophy and approach to the position was that it’s hard to cover the community if you’re not actually out covering the community.”

While he both realizes and learned that a daily paper in city of 50,000 people can be different than a weekly paper in a county of 18,000, Papin hopes to bring that same community-centric approach to his leadership of the sports department here.

“To that end, while prep sports coverage is certainly important, there are opportunities to broaden our coverage to ensure that it more closely reflects the diversity of athletes in the community as a whole,” said Papin. “To that end please don’t hesitate to reach out to the sports desk if you know of a great sports story that we may not be aware of.”

He is appreciative and humbled by the trust that’s been placed in him, but he also knows a main reason why he will be ready for the role.

“I would be remiss if I didn’t thank our outgoing editor Sean Williams,” said Papin. “Even before moving to Minot, Sean was always ready and willing to provide advise on everything from where to get an apartment to what schools we cover and why. He is one of the principle reasons I feel comfortable with taking on this new role. I wish him nothing but the best in the future, and I know he will be missed.”

Papin holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Northern Michigan University, in Marquette, Mich., and his Master of Business Administration from Murray State University, in Murray, Ky.

He got his start in journalism at WLZZ Radio in Montpelier, Ohio, and also wrote briefly for The Village Reporter in West Unity, Ohio.

Papin resides in Minot, and he’s enjoying getting to know all the great thing the Magic City has to offer.

In his free time, Papin can frequently be found photographing wildlife at the many National Wildlife Refuges in the area, as well as state and national parks.

A self-described sports masochist, much of his fall will be spent cheering on his favorite sports team, whom he once held season tickets: the Cleveland Browns.

He enjoys cycling, hiking, golf, and can’t wait to try curling for the first time.

Starting at $2.99/week.
