Champions crowned at Nodak Speedway

Adam Papin/MDN Will Scheresky, in the No. 77 car, races ahead of Brent Woznicki in the No. 36 car during a qualifying heat of the ICMA Stock Cars on Sunday night.

Sunday night seemed like it might not come after rain cancelled racing at Nodak Speedway the previous two weeks. However, Mother Nature cooperated with a warm but beautiful night as the track crowned its season winners on Sunday night.

The IMCA Hobby Stock division seemed stuck in deja vu, as Caden Appelt bested Kyler Satran in the feature. It was Appelt’s six win of the season at Nodak in just seven races. However, Satran has been right there all season long, and his second-place finish was just enough to preserve his lead in the overall points standing and claim the championship.

“It’s been an absolutely amazing season,” said Satran on his title. “It’s been stressful in a really, really long season. A lot of hours into it, so it’s worth every moment, even the downs that you got into it. There are some nights where you have more downs then ups, so you take what you can.”

Two straight rainouts left Appelt wondering what might have been had he had two more features to catch Satran.

“Those two rainouts, one was for sure, one was questionable, but it changed the course of the championship race,” said Appelt. “Congrats to Kyler. The kid puts in the work and races a lot more night than I have.”

After back-to-back titles in the Hobby Stock division, Satran looks to move to the Sportmod division, but first he will head to Boone, Iowa for the IMCA Super Nationals where he will look to stay in the top ten of the national standings.

Entering the weekend, Satran was ninth in the standings with 963 points.

“I’ll be hopping in a sportmod here soon and trying that out,” said Satran. “I don’t know where it’s gonna go. We plan on hitting as many shows as I can before the end of year and hitting some big shows. I know we want to go to Hays, Kansas for the Fall Nationals. That’s always fun down there.”

The IMCA Northern Sportmod saw Bottineau’s Gabriel Deschamp win both the feature and the season points title, and in victory lane he was all smiles as he climbed on top of his car to salute the crowd.

“The way that the race started out today, we were kind of struggling in our heat,” said Deschamp, who is one of the youngest drivers on the track, having just completed high school in May. “I definitely didn’t think that this was going to turn out the way it did. My goal was to just stay close to Beeter. My car was handing good, so I kept moving up. I knew I wanted to try and go for the win obviously.”

Deschamp placed fifth in the season points total for stock cars as well. He plans on spending another year in the sport mods and stock cars. After leaving for college at the University of North Dakota this week, Deschamp will return for Motor Magic before racing at other tracks across the state to close out the year.

Will Scheresky won his fourth feature of the year, but it wasn’t enough to pass Adam Goff in the points standings in the IMCA Stock Car division. The two drivers were separated by just three points in the final standings.

“I love Adam. He’s a good guy,” said Scheresky. “We finished first and second in the points last year with me winning the championship and Adam runner up. I told him at the beginning of this season we were going to flip flop this year, and he could have it. I’ll take runner up and to do it, we were laughing pretty good.”

In the IMCA Sport Compact division, Krys Yost outlasted James Gilbert for the feature win. Yost, from Belfour, finished seven points ahead of Alex Thompson, of Bismarck, in the season points standings.

Travis Hagen completed one of the best seasons in recent memory to take the IMCA Modifieds title with a feature win last night. In the final standings, he edged Drew Christianson by 17 points and Wayne Johnson by 27.

“We’ve had a really good year,” said Hagen. “We were lucky with not having too many mechanical issues. We just king of stuck with it all year. We raced a lot and are happy with the way everything turned out.”
