Passa’s no-hitter propels Velva to 13-0 win

Sean Williams/MDN Olivia Passa (6) of the Velva Aggies fires a pitch during a game against the Max-South Prairie Cossacks at the Minot State Bubble on Thursday morning.

On Thursday morning, the Velva Aggies softball team (4-0 overall, 3-0 Region 4) made the most of a rainy day by matching up with the Max-South Prairie Cossacks (2-3 overall, 2-3 Region 4) at the Minot State Bubble.

Senior starting pitcher Olivia Passa made the most of the day as well, and her performance of three RBI, a single and two triples at the plate wasn’t even her most remarkable achievement in the game.

Passa took the mound and threw a no-hitter against the Cossacks in five innings, as the Aggies gave her plenty of run support in a 13-0 win.

“The win felt good, they were pressuring us a lot at first and I think we adjusted well to their pitcher,” Passa said on the win.

In a dominant performance on the mound, Passa threw five innings while allowing no runs on no hits with one walk and 13 strikeouts.

“It felt good. Berkley Selzler, our catcher, was calling some good mixes in there for me.”

The first hitter that Passa faced made contact on a grounder, however, she shut the Cossacks down the rest of the way and did not allow another ball to be put in play until there was one out in the fifth inning.

While not trying to think about a possible no-hitter during the game, Passa shared she felt confident and believed something like that was possible after a few innings of work. “I was hopeful to get it done. Especially after the third inning.”

From that third inning on, Passa cruised as she faced a total of nine batters and retired eight of them via the strikeout.

In a big day at the plate for the Aggies, Selzler, Emma Balas and Cienna Clemens drove in one run each, Halie Fletschock drove in two runs, and Kinley Peterson drove in four runs to lead the way. They did most of their damage in the fourth inning, where they put six of their 13 runs on the board.

Starting at $2.99/week.
